I was wondering whether GPS DIY orienteering has been developed yet, or is in development? By this I don't mean using GPS as a navigational aid, but as a course-setting tool.
This would work as follows:
The program is given the co-ordinates within which the "event" will take place, and the start/finish location. The program then randomly selects n locations within the area, as controls. You check that the selected controls are in accessible locations (eg. not in a lake or OOB). You print off the orienteering map, including computer-generated course. During the run, your device (probably a GPS watch) informs you when you get to each control. (This can be set for accuracy, ie. beeping when you're within 5 metres or 20 metres etc. depending on how good you are.) So there are no physical controls (ie. kites) to find - they're "virtual" controls.
I wonder even if this could be the future of orienteering? No kites, no SI units, no dibbers...

Try Sporteering.
One of several that does what you suggest, except for generating random locations. Controls need to be on a feature, unless you are really struggling and resort to the good old "shallow" reentrant that allows you to put it just about anywhere

There is a newish system called Maprun (developed in Australia) that is becoming more widely used in Scotland and England.
Check out here for an example:

Plus there is MoBo - mobile Phone Orienteering - details on this page:

Thanks. I've installed Sporteering, and there's a Birmingham event on 1st May
It's not quite what I had in mind though, from the point of view that I can't set a course myself right now and just do it.
When you say controls need to be on a feature I take it you mean that's your opinion. From the navigational point of view I don't see why a control can't just be anywhere.
