Still scheduled? I trust the unis are being kept up to date on latest status. A number of teams, especially from up north and over the border will be planning to set off today.

Police forces across the UK have told people to travel only if necessary.
Should the event really be going ahead ?

Re: BUCS 2018
interesting that the TVOC FB post states that their sat morn event is cancelled because '.... the roads around the area are currently very icy and snow covered and it wouldn't be safe to allow people to travel....'
Wonder how many students will take risks to get to BUCs which is running in parallel?

From the event FB page
Hello everyone,
The decision is that the weekend will go ahead.
We have visited the individual area this morning taking the M40 and A40 routes. The roads are clear and there should be no issues for all forms of transportation. We have also consulted with the officials and they are in agreement with our course of action.
We understand that from some areas of the country travel may be challenging. YOU MUST CONSULT WITH YOUR SPORTS UNION ABOUT TRAVEL. Take your time in travelling down.
There are no issues with parking in the area, if you are coming by coach please contact Ed by email.
Jackets, gloves, hats, and whistles will be mandatory. Clothes for general cold weather are highly recommended. At the event, universities are minded to look after their fellow club mates.
We appreciate that some people will be uncertain about this decision. We believe that a successful event can be held. If you feel that you cannot travel, then please don’t.
Ed and Jamie

Any EOD available for guests?
Looks like the only orienteering anywhere in the country this weekend.
Safe journeys everyone.

We're still hopeful for Aspley Heath...last used in 1973 for the Southern Champs..a brilliant area.

Re: BUCS 2018
An open letter regarding BUCS Orienteering Championships 2018
I am writing this as an individual, and the following represents my opinion, not that of my university of club.
I believe a severe error in judgement has been made in allowing BUCS to go ahead this weekend.
In the announcement it states that there are no issues parking, and that the M40 and A40 routes to the area are clear. That may well be the case, but large areas of the UK are currently experiencing travel chaos due to the extremely adverse weather conditions we are currently experiencing. The British Armed Forces have been mobilised to aid thousands of stranded drivers both north and south, police forces nation-wide have urged people not to travel unless necessary, rail service providers across the country are advising people no to travel on their routes, a major motorway in the north have been closed “indefinitely”, Met Office weather warnings continue to Monday, and sadly people have died in weather related traffic incidents. All levels of governmental and non-governmental organisations are advising not to travel unless absolutely necessary. Whilst your assessment of local conditions have lead you to conclude that the event can go ahead, you appear to have not fully assessed the travel arrangements for many of the participating universities who need to travel hundreds of miles, trough treacherous conditions, to reach the event.
You state “If you feel that you cannot travel, the please don’t”. This flippant response shows a complete lack of understanding or care for the situation you have put people in by allowing the event to go ahead. This event is the national championships with titles, medals, and BUCS points available, as well as being a selection race for the World University Championships. There are many athletes, coaches, and universities who take these things very seriously. Knowing that these rewards will be on offer, whether they are there to compete for them or not, is putting them in an awkward situation. Teams will know that if they don’t go, not only are they forfeiting their opportunity for the aforementioned rewards, but that they will still be handed out at the end of the day regardless of who takes part. There are many out there who ‘feel’ that they can’t go, but due to the rewards on offer they are willing to make risky decisions in order to not lose out. Whilst you may feel you are not forcing an, by allowing the event to take place, you are certainly having a significant effect on peoples decision making.
I would also like to raise the point that whilst BUCS organisers have concluded that conditions are fine for the event to go ahead, TVOC have decided to cancel the local event that was meant to be happening alongside BUCS due to the poor conditions.
I will be urging my university to lodge an official complaint with BUCS and British Orienteering, and I urge any other universities that feel the same way to do so as well.

Well put.
Decision to go ahead as a national event is stark staring bonkers and thoroughly irresponsible. It shows little understanding of national issues.

BUCS Orienteering - cancellation
My sincere apologies to you all for cancelling this event. This is clearly something we didn't want to do and whilst the area (and assembly/parking) would have supported an event the travel to Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire is clearly a factor that needs to be strongly considered.
We did have conversations with institutions and BUCS about the responsibility and guidance to be given to teams about travelling and there was clear guidance that it didn't sit with us as organisers. That advice clearly now does not sit comfortably with us as organisers. I am mindful that when faced with an important competition people unfortunately make irrational decisions and travelling in these conditions is such a one. We have come to the conclusion that we as organisers are clearly influencing people's decisions by continuing to hold the event and if an issue occurred that issue would sit with us. That is not something I wish to contend with.
In short the gains from putting on the event are now far outweighed by the risks that could happen to teams travelling in adverse weather conditions.
Due to the efforts required to re-host the event (permissions/volunteers etc); the lack of potential opportunities in the British Orienteering calendar and the nature of university terms rescheduling is highly unlikely. A final note will on that will be made next week.

Re: BUCS 2018
As a member of TVOC's event team, I saw the huge efforts that Jamie, Ed and John Dalton (TVOC) put in over the last week to try to make this event happen. They did everything in their power to ensure it went ahead. This included cancelling TVOC's Saturday Series so resources could be focused on BUCS. (Not that many newcomers, for whom the Saturday Series is designed, were likely to turn up!). Sadly the one thing they could not influence was the state of the UK's roads.
Ironically, Saturday was quite a decent day in High Wycombe. The bitter wind of the last few days had died down, temperatures were a degree or two warmer, and the sun briefly glimmered through the mist.
Competitors were no doubt disappointed the event could not go ahead. But Jamie, Ed and John will also be deeply disappointed. I trust their efforts were appreciated.
