Two beatifully vague bits of ancient New Forest woodland I always found/find difficult are Bramshaw Woods and Castle Malwood.
Bramshaw Woods (top end of BOC80 area) appears out of use these days which is a shame. And Castle Malwood used to be twice the size as the map extended to the east of Rufus Stone (and even into Shave Wood the other side of the A31 at one point)

Re: Most technical area in the UK
Vague terrain is tricky, but good bearing and hard running sorts that. Mix of vague slopes, flat bits, detail (contour and rock) and variable visibility is the ultimate test - why Scandinavia is so tricky - and why Muir of Dinnet is great.

Castlandhill is the most technical area in the UK*.
If you don't believe that, you need to come and run the ScottishSpring.

*Andypat will explain afterwards exactly how this is defined

Exactly. Complex terrain becomes easy for those who are technically skilled in that terrain type. Vague terrain is never easy.

As Jon says, changes in terrain are tricky. You don't even need to have difficult terrains to switch between, as long as their require different techniques/strategies, a good planner will be able to catch people out.

Re: Most technical area in the UK
Open to forest, easy control siting to difficult control siting, short leg to long leg, uphill to contouring, high visibility to low visibility, low visibility to high visibility. Its changes that make orienteering "difficult" so any area that has only one type of challenge will never be the most "technical". Thus New Forest or Epping Forest or sand-dunes will never be the most "difficult" terrain, whereas Scandinavian or Deeside areas will.

Re: Most technical area in the UK
For me it is mostly low-visibility terrain which prevents me from linking together the significant features reliably. There are more periods of uncertainty and it's often hard to run straight which compounds the problem. Parts of Inshriach and Roseisle spring to mind.

Straight after the thought "the next leg looks easy" passes through my mind I go on to make a mistake...

I'm working on a definition to fit the above statement - I might need to use quantum theory...
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

Re: Most technical area in the UK
The great Oyvind Thon was once asked if he found a particular leg hard. I found his answer really illuminating and it changed my approach instantly. He said "There is no such thing as a difficult leg. What is difficult is to judge the speed needed."

I wondered if Eddie's adventures in Auchingarrich prompted him to think about technical areas. There are a lot of pink highlights in Winsplits across all courses.

You imply that I had a bad run Freefall - I wouldn't say so. But it was a great area.
