Re: Attack Point - Social Media or Training Tool?
When Kenny set up attackpoint, initially the idea was to record training specifically for orienteering. But then the comments and discussion functionality took off so he built out a few bits there, particularly the ability to comment on every training entry.
So now most people use it for both, and if you've got a nice group of friends going then I think that works really well.

The comment button is incredibly useful for making coaching points, giving tips or warnings (eg overtraining). Equalling comments to "social media" is a little simplistic. The value of AP as a training tool is increased hugely by having feedback.

I hadn't really thought of AP as social media until fairly recently, but if you look at the 4 'common features' listed on wikipedia, it ticks them all: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media

Forgive me but it's not something I've ever used. Given that most people see there is at least some element of social media to it, what protections does it offer junior orienteers? For example, is it possible to restrict who sees or comments on your posts?

Access controls exist, but are part of the paid-for service. You can pick an unguessable alias and hide your real name so random others can't find you with the free service. You don't see comments on your own log unless you choose to.

A year round and I'm back on my high horse.
Seems at odds with other social media platforms juniors may be using - if you want privacy control you need to pay for it. Adults you don't know will be hiding under aliases.
Whilst not Orienteering specific it would seem Strava would be a more sensible option for a junior.

What's your actual concern? I don't think there are many "predators" lurking on AP trying to lead unsuspecting juniors astray are there? And for the juniors it's a blast so let's not ruin their fun shall we?
As graeme says, if you like you can already restrict access to your log to only chosen people, as some are doing. I didn't know that was part of the paid-for bits but I could ask Kenny whether that can be made free, if there is a big concern.

If that's a concern consider using a spreadsheet on your home PC.
Id be surprised if most people using attackpoint don't want it to be seen by others.
I haven't used it for a while - got lazy - but also notice that people often use it for comments about orienteering events that they don't want to post "publicly".
Whereas a post on NOPE is seen as a complaint directed at the event, a post on attack point would have to be actively sought out by the organiser and therefore not the same sort of posting.

Re: Attack Point - Social Media or Training Tool?
Not a huge concern - just that a useful tool has a seemingly obvious flaw - that you can't easily choose who sees what you write.
I have read 'banter' between teens on attackpoint that I would find very tiresome if it was directed at me.
Obviously there many ways to keep your training log - that's my point - why should a junior choose attackpoint?
interesting though - how many is too many?

......why should a junior choose attackpoint?
First point - its between teenagers who are giving the same as they get so what you would feel with comments like that is irrelevant.
Second point - its quick, easy to use, free, open to coach so advice can be given - either on log or by e-mail, open to others who can (and do) give useful advice.

Re: Attack Point - Social Media or Training Tool?
Pretty sure most use it as a training tool. There are way better and easier means by which to socialise online. The training/logging tools it offers are better IMO than Strava. Also excellent for tracking training over a long period of time and looking back say if you've been to an area before. Social side can be fun, "banter" on there is never more than that, it's often mates just having a laugh with each other as they would in real life.

What Big Jon said.
Plus, AFAICS, there's no mechanism for private messaging, which seems to be a big safeguarding concern re Facebook, etc

Good point - and one that I had overlooked!
And unlike Nopesport which allows private messaging...

I found this lurking in quite ironic.
