OK not really but I did enjoy the Scottish Score today up near Elgin in Moravian Orienteer territory.
Reason for posting was out of 151 finishers at today's event, 50 were juniors. I cant believe thats not some sort of a record for this event and suggests the NE of Scotland (and judging by the number of entrants, Moravian in particular) are almost singlehandedly ensuring the future of Orienteering in Scotland. Well done to everyone concerned!
Out of curiosity last years event in the Central Belt had 153 finishers, of which around 20 were juniors.

Re: Blueprint for the future...Scottish Score
You'd get a similar figure if the event was held in Deeside but with Mor replaced by Mar
The rural clubs are winning the junior battle - just need some fo the urban clubs to step up as well and Scotland will be laughing.

Re: Blueprint for the future...Scottish Score
Thinking about junior numbers - Maroc had 25 juniors at its AGM/prize-giving/meal/party on Saturday evening and similar number at training on Sunday morning.
Give them something that attracts them back (for most this is friends and fun) and they will stay as members... once you've got them along to a first training session.

Its a perfectly nice and fun local event at this time of year, very suitable for newcomers.
But with all but 2 of the 30 Champions coming from North district, it's hard to take it seriously as a National championship. (c/f only 4 Champions from North last year, when it was in the south)

At one of our (WCOC) recent weekly night events, 23 out of 63 were juniors.

Re: Blueprint for the future...Scottish Score
At the SOA AGM it was voted to discontinue the Scottish Score Championships (or clubs being forced to stage it). However if clubs want to stage the event there is nothing to stop this happening, and I for one would hope it continues.

Seems a tad odd that MAROC organised a training day on the same day that their neighbouring club were putting on the Scottish Score mind you.

Colin that's a cop out. SOA needs to show leadership and either promote the Scottish Score or scrap it. Make no wonder that clubs like MAROC decide to do their own thing when it's viewed as a diddy and unimportant competition by the national governing body.
As you know, Moravian put as much effort and enthusiasm in to staging the event as they did when they hosted the Scottish Sprints and Nights last Feb, and will when they host the "proper" Scottish Champs (relays) next May.

Re: Blueprint for the future...Scottish Score
Its a difficult one.
Is pretty clear that the majority of Scottish Orienteers dont really value the Scottish Score as a competition.
At 78 participants, Moravian Orienteers comprised more than 50% of those competing which is a huge achievement in itself. INVOC were next with 22 and GRAMP with 17.
Of the other North clubs Maroc had 5 and BASOC 0.
I make it only 21 orienteers traveled from outside of the N region. For a small club who couldnt supply a large number of their own members to make up the numbers its not going to be an attractive event to stage. I like it but its hard to make a case for anything other than ditching it.

Re: Blueprint for the future...Scottish Score
Speaking as the previous Scottish M60 Score Champion I voted to retain the event but Andy is correct. The SOA did the democratic thing but in my opinion the discussion and vote should never have happened

FWIW, most people in Moravian I've spoken to agree. The format has proved hugely popular with club members which suggests that score events will work, for us at least, at a local level. But it's blindingly obvious that on a national level it's a lame duck.

Re: Blueprint for the future...Scottish Score
There is an amazing array of trophies; many of which had an impressive alumni of previous winners. The only class that didn't have a trophy was M80..... One family (MAROC) now have 3 winners from 2 generations of the M16.
However, I also think that the demographic was also very instructive in relation to the relevance of a 'Championship', with no 18s or 20s and a total of 11 in the 21/35 classes.

Yes - congratulations on taking full advantage of that situation Roo Wish I'd thought of that plan (and been good enough to execute it!)
