With my approaching mid-century anniversary I'm heading South for the Big 5-0 in South Africa with the rest of the Baronmax family and other INTs. Would any one have any Southern Hemisphere compasses they'd be willing to let us beg or borrow? Seems a bit extravagant to buy 5 compasses just for a week's orienteering....
Any offers gratefully received - baronmaxi AT googlemail.com.
You haven't been orienteering until you've been chased by a warthog...
Note the there are magnetic declination differences in the Southern Hemisphere so there are different compasses for S America, Southern Africa and Austral-Asia. It's not a significant difference although when using our S African compasses at the NZ WMOC we did notice the needle was not flat and it was a little slow in rotating.
I think Lorna Eades has mine Baron - youre welcome to borrow if you can prise them away, presuming they arent also heading there (they might be). I managed to get a couple of serviceable southern hemishpere baseplates at Cotswold for £20 each
