Any idea what that means? Various places online say he won a medal, but not here...

From REME sports records, the then Cpl Hart was the 4th man in 1988; it seems to be a travelling reserve as only 3 competed in the medal race according to all the records.

Maybe he was a 4th team member? I don't know enough about Modern Pentathlon to be positive about team numbers.

He orienteered for the Army a fair bit in the early 80s, going to Sweden with the Army team in 1983. Then Modern Pentathlon, probably with full-time training, took over.

Peter will have a hard act to follow. Mike Hamilton put a lot of work into British Orienteering which some b*ggers never appreciated. For a number of years there was funding available through SportEngland; Mike understood that system and worked very hard to get that funding for orienteering, certainly more hours than he was paid for. When that funding reduced, he steered National Office through a reduction programme to put us on a good financial footing now. I myself think that we need more funding in National Office to carry on the good work but that is something for our new CEO to think about.
I met Mike a number of times over the years, at various conferences and meetings. He knew his stuff, and answered his emails. The one time I had a serious problem (child protection at a forthcoming JK) Mike was at home on the telephone, advising me.

Christine, I hope that you are not referring to some contributors on this forum
Fwiw, I think that your comments are spot on. 'Good luck' to Peter.

Which raise the debate over the function of BOF i.e.
1. Is BOF meant to be the governing body for the sport of orienteering throughout the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland or
2. Is BOF meant to be a funding channel for English money spent in England and used to keep people in a job?
BOF acts as 2.... I mean this Oomph stuff.... I really don't understand how introducing some form of 'orienteering' into care homes for the elderly is going to help orienteering... it may help the residents and produce a profit for the providers... but help develope orienteering?????
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Mike also wasted more money and did more damage than some b*ggers appreciated.
He was certainly very capable and affable – personally I liked him and enjoyed all the meetings I had with him – he listened and occasionally got things done. However, he struggled to understand orienteering and had a lack of respect bordering on contempt for orienteers which used to bubble over in his more candid moments.
As Christine says he worked very hard to get funding, but this was used to develop British Orienteering not the sport of orienteering. A good deal of time was spent ‘modernising’ BO - reshaping the board and steering groups and growing the professional staff to make it attractive to Sport England, but very little of the Sports England money has contributed to the development of orienteering, much of it has been squandered on peripheral programmes run by outsiders. Where these programmes have been criticised Mike was always quick to reassure us that it wasn’t our money that was being wasted!
And Mikes reaction to the money running out – get rid of the staff and consultants we can no longer afford, leave gaping holes in the infrastructure which the volunteers he mistrusted will no doubt fill (for free), and do a runner!
Let’s hope Peter (and the board) recognises that British Orienteering is about the members, clubs, volunteers and the sport itself, not just a vehicle for spending Sport England money.
To oblivion and beyond....

Re: New BO CEO
The actions of Mike Hamilton have devastated elite orienteering in Britain. If the Sport England money was used wisely, it could have supported the framework of volunteers / coaches that had been providing excellent orienteering coaching for many years. Instead the money was squandered on bringing in career sports administrators with little or no knowledge of or respect for orienteering as performance staff. These staff cast aside the immense talent of the previous coaches, preventing them from providing their much-needed skills to the team on a voluntary basis. Now the money is gone, and the previous coaches are left totally disillusioned with British Orienteering. I don't know much abut the new guy, but he can't be as bad as Mike!

I think a lot of people in Scotland will empathise with this view.

Re: New BO CEO
I support what BOF stands for and hope that the New CEO will manage to reunify British orienteering.
Yet there are some things that I struggle to get my head around. Like why was BOF lauding the significant number of orienteers competing in the OMM? That same weekend there were many worthy (levy-paying) events run by constituent clubs going on that might have liked some recognition. Such as the deciding round in Scotland's national orienteering league which might also have benefited from a few more elite runners.
