...is this weekend in Langdale.
Plenty of orienteers on the startlist. Should be some tight racing.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
Day 1 results here:
https://www.theomm.com/results/TheOMM2017/index.html#b
Lots of retirals (inc ba-ba). Anyone know why?
A bit of a breeze here in Springfield making it difficult to keep my drives straight off the tee. Maybe more windy in the Langdales?
Disappointed not to see TV news reports of hundreds of runners unaccounted for out on the hills.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
Freefall Junior and partner Dan decided to go straight from Start to Finish excluding any checkpoints on the Short Score. It is understood that they took table, chairs, candlestick holders and wine. This was Rory's 13th KIMM/OMM and they had done enough getting into the prizes in previous years. Amazingly (and it must be annoying) they are far from last.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
Looks like it was pretty tough on day 1. Youngest daughter and son-in-law second on the combined course in a time of 8.46
Only 6 teams out of around 60 starters completed that course. Will be interesting to get post race comments.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
Looking at results it looks like a fair bit of carnage - has there ever been a higher retrial rate on linear courses? - maybe one of the Galloways?

Arrochar in 91 had a similarly long time for the elite but I don't think the weather was as bad as Saturday sounded to be this time. Don't have the results to hand to check the finishing percentage.

Congrats to Tam Wilson and Al Masson - top result for 2 youngsters.
Also respect to Kim Buckley for completing what was obviously a classic OMM weekend.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
The Saturday weather was tough but nothing unexpected and that can't be coped with (very similar to mountain trial). The clag made some of the controls very tricky though. We retired as I made a howler of a mistake on #5 and, travelling light (as you have to when going for the win) we chilled quite a bit as we stopped moving (were comfortable when moving). Was making mistakes on the next leg and difficult to warm up with impetus gone, completing the day was a possibility but it was more likely that we wound run ourselves into trouble, and bailing out from Sprinkling tarn was much easier than Wasdale!
Shame as I relish weather like that, but this was the first time I've had to go control hunting and lost all warmth.

There is considerable variation between the points scores shown on the Routegadget map compared to the actual race map for the OMM Medium Score class - not sure about the other score classes.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
Big Jon.... not many reached the campsite having completed the course on the classic Galloway MM in 1974 or 75....
We took a shortcut and got to the swamp on which the campsite was built early.... then went to the pub
Maybe more would have lasted with better kit of today.... our tent was ultra light but made out of parachute silk so not much good in the bad weather particularly since there was no ground sheet.
But one thing came from that MM.... the great over or round dilemma solved by sigurd daheli and Stig Berg who took the ultra long road route..... and smashed everyone else.

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
Heretical question - does it make sense to have a race where 75% of people retire in what seemed like "relatively normal" conditions for the time of year (at least not extreme ones)?
I like a tough challenge like the next person - well slightly less than some of you mentalists - but this would certainly put me off taking part as I also like the satisfaction of completing my course in a vaguely reasonable time.
Or, does being "really really tough" make it more attractive to people?

Re: OMM 50th anniversary
I think the weather on Saturday was a bit more extreme than "relatively normal". What maybe caught people out was the forecast which was suggesting light rain. The combination of heavy rain, very strong winds, the clag and the rough terrain meant that even with the best of gear it was difficult to keep moving fast enough to keep warm. I have never been so cold at the end of a race - even on the LDMT which was abandoned at control 5 because of the extreme weather.
