I can't help thinking that the result is strongly affected by geography. For instance, OD didn't have any of their whizzy ex-juniors. West of Dartmoor is a long way to go 2 or 3 weeks into the university term.

FVO seem to manage for many years now. I suspect it is mainly down to quality f club members, club spirit with a geography over-rider.

I am not in FVO but I know they are very good at enthusing members to travel. It probably helps that they have some depth in certain areas so probably dont need everyone to travel, and I'm sure the fact that they are in a winning team also helps motivate. Most clubs know they are not in with a chance of winning and with the best will in the world, its always going to be harder to motivate to go.

Re: CSC Final 2017
Looking at the results, it doesn't seem like the results were "strongly" influenced by geography as INT won the trophy, and FVO and SYO were 2nd and 3rd in the cup. "Somewhat" influenced by geography is possibly right. Personally I think this is OK as this gives different clubs an edge in different years, making the results less predictable and more interesting.
A quick scan - looks like 4 clubs in the trophy and 4 clubs in the cup competition didn't field a full team. I'd say this is more of a concern. It must be dispiriting for clubs to motivate their members to travel, but be 1 or 2 team members short of a full team, giving them no chance. Perhaps a more flexible scoring system is needed?
Another way to look at it is that if a club can't make a full team for the final, the next place club (however that is defined) that didn't make the final should be allowed to compete in the final instead?

I think the fact that teams across the country are motivated to try and raise a team is the important thing. Strengthening club identity is vital, no matter how big your club. If clubs can't quite manage a full team this time, there's always another day.
I don't agree in dropping the number of counters just to cater for clubs who can't generate the necessary enthusiasm, and I say that as a member of a club that qualified but didn't go to the final. It was just too impractical to get a team of 25 to travel over 1000 miles at a time of year when there's a lot of travelling to other events required. You make your choices.
I don't think BASOC will have been too upset at not managing a full team - they are probably quite proud to get half a dozen down from such a long way away.

Not at all, if anything last year was more dispiriting in that my club made a big effort, bribed our University students to come to the event yet could only manage 7th. This year we didn't make an effort but those of us that did go enjoyed a nice weekend away, combined the final with other activities and got some cream teas in. Those juniors that had been to Peter Palmer, JHI, JIRCs, Sprint/Middle Champs etc in recent weeks were pleased to have a quiet weekend at home.
It was about three weeks before the event when I knew we wouldn't have a full team. You seem to be suggesting that we should have then dropped out, cancelled all the hotel/B&B bookings and given the 2nd placed team in our heat one or two weeks to get a team together.

Re: CSC Final 2017
Agree with Sunlit Forres - 1000 miles esp in middle of school holidays (2 weeks for tattle howking in Aberdeenshire) is too far to ask members to travel. Especially as our club membership profile is not the same as the CSC scoring system (we have approx 50% junior membership).
Aslo our older juniors had 8 & 9 involved in JIRCs and JHIs respectively - both involving looooong journeys to the deep south and deepest Wales so getting them to travel to the other end of the UK would be unfair and a waste of time/effort for them.
