Exactly, a rectangle.
You need to detach yourself from words and start thinking about geometry, this is regarding drawing after all. The symbol is given dimensions: 0.6mm x 2.5mm. The corners are all 90 degress. This is a rectangle.

Re: Preview of Start triangles
So where would the rectangle / line thingy actually be used? I presume not on the actual competition map, as you are supposed to run past the start triangle and navigate from there, so it doesn’t matter where the maps were issued?
On blank maps then? Or in the start lane? But then you might as well put the actual start location on?
Think I’ve seen it once on a post race GPS tracker maybe, but still can’t see the value add.

Re: Preview of Start triangles
Pertinent to this thread is that the 2018 version of the IOF Control Descriptions document has just been published.
Not too many surprises here, but it does include the new "optional extra line showing the distance to the start triangle from the timed start". See example below:-

Re: Preview of Start triangles
I've certainly run international races with the taped route to the start point drawn on the map. Map issue was at the start of this and drawn with the 'dash' as per ISOM 2017.
Taped route to start: https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2013wocMidM/
Taped route to start, including map-collection 'dash': https://www.tulospalvelu.fi/gps/2017sotsmH21/
Second example isn't very well drawn, as it's all too close and probably not worth doing in the first place. But I can see how this could be useful when there are long runs to the start kite.
Relating to the original idea, of printing this onto the 'blank' maps in call-up. I personally don't think it's necessary, but can't think of a reason to no do it.
The fact we get control descriptions before the blank map has always puzzled me, as it is easier than many people think to work out where you first control is going to be if you understand planning.

I've said before as someone with no orienteering family to help him as a kid it took me years to realise that the "start" on the map wasnt the bit you started from. Anything that helps beginners make sense of this is a good thing.

Presumably the course length will now include this run out since it is included in the timing ?

Re: Preview of Start triangles
I think what slowtochide is referring to is this...
http://www.go78.org/doma/show_map.php?user=Pascal.Pannier&map=1437
The start area is shown by the four corner-sharing rectangles NW of the start triple-parallelogram.
I have occasionally set off along a sparsely taped route and never seen the start kite, then tried to relocate en route to 1 once I realised the tapes had run out. It would have been somewhat helpful had I known where I started. But maybe I was cheating if I never saw the start?

...and to be clear, that's "timed start" in the sense of "point at which the timing begins", rather than the British sense of "start where you don't need to punch a start box".

Yes, that made me think for a moment; what I think he meant was:
UK: you have a "timed start" (i.e. you're deemed to have started at the time you've been given even if you're late, and don't have to punch at the start) or a "punching start" (you start when you punch the start control)
IOF: "timed start" meaning when your time starts from - so no difference if there isn't a start punch, but if there is then it's where the start punch is - which I guess could in principle either be where you collect your map or at the start kite.

You have to punch the SI clear station.
Or with ʇıɯǝ, you punch the start box at your start time for a punching start, or for a non-punching start you punch the start before your timed start time.
Got that?

Thanks roadrunner for helping clarify that situation and Graeme for trying really hard. Well done.
