Today it's 20 years since Princess Diana died.... where were you???
I was organising a Scottish Vets training camp in Scotland... I remember discussing with Ian Turner in the big kitchen while sorting breakfast out and I think Hilary Quick was there also..
I can't remember exactly where though... Tayside somewhere.

Re: WHERE WERE YOU?
Packing up our stuff at Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog at the end of a family camping holiday. We heard about it on the car radio news. Six year old daughter complained on the way home because all we could find on the radio was mournful music.
On the day of the funeral, swimming lessons were cancelled and the rowing club wouldn't let us row, so we went for a walk along the Malverns. There were lots of people doing the same.

Re: WHERE WERE YOU?
I was in France, not that far from Paris, at the French Relay Champs with GB team. Some French guy told us before the relay, we thought he was joking and trying to psych us out before the race. Not sure if we beat Thierry's team in the end but think it was pretty close. Afterwards it came on the news on the car radio, we all just stood there saying nothing.

We had an end of holiday treat planned taking the children to the Sealife Centre. They all got up early and put on the tv to watch their favourite cartoon but Dan came back upstairs to say that the news was on every channel and someone had died - we thought it must be the Queen Mother.

On the morning ferry from Calais to Dover. Couldn't understand why all the Sunday papers had been withdrawn from sale, and then we heard ....

Re: WHERE WERE YOU?
I was staying with parents in Birmingham, knowing I had a place for MSc at Imperial College to start in late Sept 1997. For no apparent reason, I woke in night, so turned on radio to BBC World Service and heard story unfold. Havig worked as a nurse in several NHS and military hospitals, I remember thinking "what must it be like for anyone else who loses a family member this weekend?" Within a couple of years, I met two orienteers, who lost therir mother / wife that weekend. I have contacted both recently as all the coverage of 20 years since Diana died is also 20 years since V died.

Re: WHERE WERE YOU?
Also in France (same race as Dids) I remember the cashier at the supermarket apologising to us when she realised we were English!
The funeral was the day of the Future Champs Cup Final at Pembrey (?) one of the very few sporting events not to be cancelled. I remember Amy and Jeanette had black ribbons pinned to their o tops.

Re: WHERE WERE YOU?
We were in France, camping on a deserted council camp site. Locals approached us saying "Lady Di est mort. En Paris." but I didn't believe it or understand the conversation. Hubby turned on radio 4 long wave and got the confirmation. We returned to UK on the day of the funeral and got home in record time because the nation had stayed at home.

My Queen Mother story is I was doing a walking round of the Lairig Ghru/Lairig an Laoigh and was camped at the Fords of Avon trying to get the football results on the radio when her departure was announced. Never did get the footie - too much gushing on the radio.
Orienteering - its no walk in the park
