This is fine - the S6D day team(s) are doing a great job, as always, in organising and promoting a holiday event. Greater promotion of "winners" would be a bonus but not at the expense of something else.
The questions of whether we should even be trying to get newspaper coverage, and whether we need to be seen to be a sport, are perhaps worthy of a separate thread, to avoid derailing this one!

I have deliberately not written a daily report about runner A doing this or runner B doing that. If someone wants to trot out stats that is fine but I do not see that as my role as roving reporter.

Re: S6D
As an ex-reporter I would not necessarily see the S6D as sports page news in it's native location unless local runners were doing well - and then only afterwards.
The natural newspaper coverage might be a local to the area feature article beforehand and then.......and then.....and this is something I would strongly urge organisers to suggest.......successful competitors go back home to their own localities and tell their own local newspapers of their own success at an international orienteering event in Scotland - preferably with a link/plug to a local event coming up soon which anyone might like to attend.
This is not an elite championship event per se. It is a holiday event. Is that not a selling point in it self? I have absolutely no doubt what so ever that a lot of people are looking for something like this.

.........and when you successful orienteers send your articles in to your local newspapers remember to use one of Wendles fabulous action shots of yourself (credit her of course). A picture tells more than a thousand words that this is an action sport not a hobby.
I'm looking forward to reading about PG in the Peak Advertiser when I get back because they certainly would use the piece!

I'd never thought of it that way so I did exactly that on Day 5, as well as running a poll on our club Facebook group. Right enough very few people had a clue, or even cared. In fact some were quite hostile about there being any focus on the elite at the 6 Days as they felt this detracted from the holiday event ethos. (personally I quite like to follow the elite races)

Yet still we go to the effort of making Day 3 World Ranking status, and setting up an elite reverse-order start on Day 6 with spectator run-through, GPS tracking and big screen coverage. Surely with all these bells and whistles (which few of the 6 Dayers I spoke to seem to care about) it must be worth trying to promote this to the national press. If we don't have the skills or resources to do it ourselves, hire in a professional with the right contacts to help, as happened at WOC2015.

Great 6 Days!
Many thanks to all who contributed to running the event. Particularly those Scots who took a weeks holiday to effectively do a different job
Two points for possible discussion on a separate thread:
1. Is the scoring system as fair as possible?
2. How deep does heather need to be to merit an undergrowth screen?

And, for the Scots: is every two years too much?

Re: S6D
Having been to every 6 Days this has been one of the best. We are so lucky that the Scottish Clubs are prepared to do this every 2 years. The dedication of all the volunteers is amazing and we thank you for this opportunity to run in your amazing forests .

Re: S6D
I'd like to add my thanks and appreciation to all the Scottish clubs, members and other helpers who take on this mammoth effort every 2 years.
I think the parking and assembly arrangements this year were definitely the best - parking and assembly close every day and 2 pairs of consecutive days without change. As well as being able to leave club tents up this must also have reduced work for the organisers.
There were a couple of longish walks to starts, but this improved courses. Given a choice between long walk to assembly or start I'd take the long walk to start every time.

A fantastic week. Thank you and well done to everyone involved
Lots of challenging navigation which I really enjoyed. I found the terrain a bit rough and tough, but that's just me.
Really super impressed by the organisation of everything. The website was excellent for me through the week: mobile-friendly, frequent updates, rapid results service all great.

I think that depends on the person. I only went for a couple of days this year and in part that was because of the knock on effects from 2015. I'm constantly amazed by folk like Terry, Big Jon and countless others who seem to be able to pick up big jobs and run with them with no obvious impact on their sunny disposition. I really enjoyed the experience of not having anything to do at this years 6 days - but in the past 18 months I'd to say no at least half a dozen times to people asking me to take on one role or other. Telling people I might not be going turned out to be a decent strategy!
I think Rosine's point about effectively taking a weeks holiday to do a different job is very pertinent. For financial reasons we've had to treat the S6D as our holiday even when I've had a role, and it certainly doesn't feel like a holiday in those circumstances.
Going back to the original thread - I really enjoyed my experience at S6D this year. Felt very well organised and the campsite was excellent. It amazes me we can put this on with mostly volunteer effort every two years. Well done to all the COT, officials, clubs and freefall.

Re: S6D
Freefall was quite busy troubleshooting all week (and the week before) so is delighted we seemed to get away with it without too many cracks showing.
