LOL! Me, working in a beaurocratic position, come on!
I'm sure Mike has done some sterling work for BO over the years. I will not deface Nopesport by airing my thoughts here. Those who know me know how I will be feeling.
On another uplifting note - Ruth Holmes on the Board! Fab, fab, Fab !

I wouldn't want to make any northern enemies by taking sides for lard or buzz or anyone else, but it would be marvellous if an actual orienteer did the job going forward, rather than a bureaucrat.
Given our current demographic there must be someone who has the relevant experience and is interested.

I think this is extremely important.
When Mike was appointed there was plentiful lottery money flying around and having someone with an understanding of UKsport bureaucracy was essential. We did pretty well out of it too. But since non-Olympic sports went of of fashion that type of go-getting expertise became less important. Replacing Mike using the same job description he was hired with would be a major error.
It's worth noting that in contrast to the professionals at BOF, the SOA is volunteer led and professionally delivered. Hopefully the board will now look at which aspects of Mike's workload could be adequately done by a volunteers.

Yes I did wonder whether the job needed to be full time or whether 3 or 4 days a week would be enough. On balance I think full time would be better as there are people in an office to manage, but it might be worth looking at?

Being involved in the governance of British Orienteering can be unpleasant enough as a few-hours-a-week volunteer, so I can only offer a huge amount of respect to any "actual orienteers" who are prepared to put themselves forward to do it as their full-time job despite knowing the how much angry (and often ill-informed) flack they'll be subject to. They're going to need pretty thick skin...

I'm puzzled, Mike announced his intention to retire at 1st June, and almost 2 months later it's the latest news item, why the delay?

Given Mike ought to have had a notice period in his contract, it isn't clear to me whether his retirement date was 1st June 2017 or will be 1st June 2018 . Assuming it's the former, the Board seem in no rush to find a replacement now he's working part-time .Paul Frost wrote:I'm puzzled, Mike announced his intention to retire at 1st June, and almost 2 months later it's the latest news item, why the delay?

Just because someone announces an intention to retire, doesn't mean that it is immediately able to be published publically. There are likely to have needed to be discussions of the Board, and briefing of staff, before it can be publically released as news.

The 1st June date is the date on which he has given notice of his intention. He is certainly still CEO now, albeit part time, while the Board consider arrangements to be made for recruitment of a replacement. The timescales for that have not been announced.

Come on scott, it's not that bad. It's not like they'll be accosted in the street or slandered in the papers. I think by and large the nopesport discussions are trying to be constructive rather than flaming for the hell of it. And people don't have to read nopesport if they don't want to.

Given Scott does actually have experience of being on the board (and doubtless of being accosted about BOF matters at events even if not in the street), why would it not be reasonable for him to have an informed opinion? Replying to tell him he is wrong looks rather like an (admittedly gentle) example of the exact point he is making!
Why did I do that...

Accosted in the street, probably not. But they could expect to be accosted in event car parks - or on public transport on the way to events, or while helping on the start - by people wanting to rant at them about map scales, or the number of event levels, or the ranking list, or the junior selection policy, or levies on multi-day events, or why we don't spend more money on the elites, or why we spend so much money on the elites, or whatever else is the hot topic of the moment.
Don't get me wrong, it's very much a tiny minority of the membership who are actually unpleasant. Unfortunately - and I can only speak from my experience - they form a disproportionately large proportion of the members you actually interact with.
The non-orienteers among the British Orienteering staff have been criticised in the past for not going to the occasional orienteering event. But given the tone of some of the emails sent to the office, I could hardly blame them for not wanting to risk bumping into those people in their spare time.
