I've always been into more minimalist shoes, not extreme barefoot, but have most types of Inov-8s.
But I've now been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in my right knee (following an x-ray). Doctor suggested that off road running, and downhill in particular, may not be the ideal activity in the long term.
Searching around I find a lot of positive claims by people that say Hoka's have allowed them to continue running when they have knee problems. But I'm not sure about the stability off road with that massive sole depth, it seems like it's a turned ankle just waiting to happen. I love the "feel" you get from more minimalist shoes like the Inov-8s and can't imagine what it's like with a 30mm+ heel/sole height isolating you from the ground.
I'm also thinking that perhaps I just use them on the road to allow me to clock up the training miles and just use my Inov-8s when I go off road.
I want to keep running, so am open to trying different shoes, but it could get expensive randomly picking some to try. So any experiences that you may have with any specific models or general thoughts would be welcome.
I have also just bought some Leki micro trail vario running poles to see if they will help as well.
Any views on Hoka run shoes?

Re: Any views on Hoka run shoes?
As rocky says, I'm a fan. I do most of my training (& urban races) in Hokas (Stinson ATRs) but use other shoes for running in terrain, sprint races and occasionally just for variety. They take some getting used to, and probably do increase the odds of turning an ankle, but you learn to be careful about putting your feet down. If they allow me to run up (and down) Ben Macdui then having to mince a bit in the boulderfield is a small price to pay.
