Think jonny C as heading for the wrong control 24 not 23 , just shows , no such thing as an easy control after 2 hours running.

Coached by big Jon?
Big Jon doesn't batter through - instead he coaches the terrain to get out of his way ... and it tends to be a fast learner.

At the JK someone said to me "That Sigurd Daehli, is he Magne Daehli's Dad?"
I replied, "On the contrary, Magne Daehli is Sigurd Daehli's son!"
I've since checked with some NOR friends whether I was correct and they agreed that Sigurd is probably more famous, at least amongst the older orienteers in NOR!
Cracking 2nd half from him though!

Re: WOC Long
Very tough race today, the finish was littered with bodies as runners flung themselves across the line and collapsed into a gasping heap. Spoke to Alan after his race, said he was happy with how he did but that they just don't train to be racing for over 2 hours in a long distance event

Men's Elite winning time should be 90-100 mins so if you expect to be within 10% of the winner then the competition distance you'd be training for would be 90 [for winning a shorter Long] to 110 [10% behind winner of a longer Long]. 120 mins is clearly outside this range, but not by that much.
I'd be surprised if our top guys' training would be radically different for a 110 min run compared to a 120 min one, I'd have thought the issue might more be about pacing. If you set off on a marathon you have to pace yourself for 26 miles. This is similar in O, but clearly harder: regardless of where you expect to finish you need to work out your pace and if you set off at a pace you can maintain for 95 mins and then end up being out for > 2 hours then it'll feel very hard work at the end.

Working out what pace to run at and how to maintain it is part of their training
Anyway I'm only quoting what Alan said in a quick chat after he finished

I suspect some combination of: the veg having grown since courses were tested, marshes being wetter and winners not choosing optimum options - I wonder how fast "Superman" (sum of fastest splits) was? 5 mins outside does seem a fair bit outside the variance you'd expect. Tove was inside the winner's time range, but not by much!
In B4 it has 80 mins as target winning time for women and 100 for men. So they nailed their estimate for the women and were only 5 mins out for men (less if Olav made mistakes).
My question would be - given the range is 90-100 why make a rod for your back and aim for 100 - if your course is 30s too long it'll be outside the 90-100 range and everyone will whinge, give yourself some flexibility and aim for something a bit less than 100.

The information they had before starting was (unless amended in the TOMs):
17.1 km, 345m climb, 25 controls, 4+1 refreshment controls, winning time 100
[and no, I'm not disputing what was said, it is a fair point]
