Re: WOC Sprint Relay
EDIT: 5m contours - it was hilly but not that hilly!
Being on the ground I don't know much of what happened re: Kris, but that leg 13-14 on the Men's course is a real beauty - I have a great photo of Ralph looking down the 6 contour slope (and these are 5m contours!) and deciding to run over the bridge instead. Our initial view was that straight down looked best, but Ralph seemed to do well going round so will be interesting to look later on at what the difference is.

Currently on bus back to Tartu trying to sort 300 photos into something manageable. Should get something posted later tonight.
Organisers were clearly a little worried about people throwing themselves down the hill Ralph and Kris decided to run round, since they posted a First Aid person at the top. Although the bottom would probably have been more useful.
Had the fun of running up out of that valley in the spectator race. Ouch.

Weren't they 2.5m contours? They usually are on sprint maps.
To oblivion and beyond....

Which they may well be, as everything else I can see says 2.5m Ho hum. Was still a very steep hill, enough to make both Ralph and Kris go round.

Re: WOC Sprint Relay
They are 2.5m contours.
Myself and Kris had a discussion during our final preparations about legs that crossed the valley into and out of the castle. We thought that if the bridge option looked viable we would take it, because the climb or descent to or from the castle is very steep. Even if it is a fraction slower the benefit of not doing another climb and having some clean running map reading could make up the potential loss of a few seconds.
I was uncertain during the race which option to take, I wanted to run straight but when I looked at the descent it looked unpleasant, and I opted for round.
From a very brief analysis it seems that straight was indeed faster for out of the castle, but the bridge could be better for the way back in (if you choose that option)

Re: WOC Sprint Relay
I remember everyone complaining when I took the punters up and down the steep but runnable wooded area in Forres for the public sprint race at WOC 2015. I think the WOC planner (or the IOF event adviser) decided it was too steep for elites.

14 is a hell of a leg for a sprint race. Esp the E gaffle.

Pictures now uploaded.
Here's the hill and the associated first aid facilities.
This one and this one indeed show that Ralph had a look before thinking better of it, but the Austrian went straight.
