I write from the position of a keenly interested fan who knows much less than other contributors about getting top-level results. So when gg, who does know about getting top-level results, says "back to the Stone Ages", I take notice.
This year's crowd-funding did a great job of helping a team get to WOC, and cheering them so they performed well. The women did really well both individually and in the relay, and I was pleased to see them keep their Division 1 place. I was a bit disappointed to see the men relegated, but they were always up against the odds and so it wasn't unexpected. It was good to see several athletes debuting well, and others progressing, and the team as a whole functioning well. And it was brilliant GBR were so competitive in the sprint relay.
Now to the 22nd September announcement, which I read as a finance statement.
If you haven't looked at these documents, you may find them helpful in understanding the competitions and selection side:

Like Duncan, I agree Graeme's points except the ownership of the British Sprints Champs. In fact I'm sceptical of any of the several plausible event based suggestions that have been made actually being practicable given the way events come about. But maybe the national conference about events next Saturday will surprise me (but I would settle for it recc'ing the Nopesport plan for national champs.)
I also note the continuing importance of SEDS, and thank those involved. (Would be nice if your website was more up-to-date please.)
One thing I do wonder about is whether it would not be helpful, with limited funds after entry etc fees are paid, to think of two distinct needs
a) financial support for a few athletes in their first senior years.
b) staff support for World Cup races.
I understand the wish for athletes to be "self-reliant", and can see that is essential now for development and training, but surely having someone to attend the team managers' meetings, drive a car, pass a drink and a comment in the coaching area would be a good use of funds? Maybe even sorting a massage after running two hours in hot weather with 800m of climb, with a middle and sprint relay on the next two days? In Grindelwald for World Cup Round 4 it was again like World Cup Round 1 - no manager -
but here are our team after the long anyway (Chris Smithard arrived later, after running the British Sprints):

Re: GB WOC Team Funding Appeal
I see one document refers to a named Squad Manager. Thank goodness, BO and the named manager for that.

Re: GB WOC Team Funding Appeal
Useful to post another link for future reference, today's announcement titled
Performance Programme 2018.
https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/3943
I welcome Ed's appointment as Senior Squad Manager, and that there will be a (volunteer, expenses covered) team manager at all World Cup races, and additional volunteers for World Cup 1 (Europeans in 2018) and WOC.
I do not know and don't want to guess how the athlete awards will work out.
I hope SEDS will be even stronger, as it could well be the way that all the UK-based Squad members manage collective training.
[Edited after news of Ed Nicholas appointment which followed shortly after above linked announcement.]

Another link useful to have here. Announcement of 2018 squad athletes, 24 of them: https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/3979
Of the 16 athletes who went to the World Champs only JK and British (Long) Champion Tessa not there. Thanks to Tessa for everything, and worth noting a really good international 2017; she was an important part of several excellent GBR Sprint Relay performances which we enjoyed watching.
World Cup Round 1 (Finland) - 3rd.
WOC (Estonia) - 6th.
World Games (Poland) - 5th.
I think she was also justifiably proud of 13th in the Middle Race at the World Games.

Re: GB WOC Team Funding Appeal
And where are the squad athletes? By my estimation, currently 10 are in Scotland, 9 abroad, and 5 (2 of whom are sprint specialists) in England and Wales.
[Edit 2/12/17] Updated estimate: 9 Scotland, 8 abroad, 7 E&W.

Re: GB WOC Team Funding Appeal
Another way to support up and coming orienteers is through the Squad support fund - started by Martin Hyman way back when! This provides grants to individuals or groups to support added-value training. The trustees (to call them that) meet in January every year and allocate money to suitable applicants. Over the years many thousands of pounds have been provided. If anyone wants to know more information PM me and I'll pass on contact details.
