Wow, great run by Yannick Michiels! I thought Kyburz's time (19 secs quicker than anyone else) wouldn't be beaten.

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
I think quite a few people ran the Sprint qualifier because they had to for start position on the Long. A few DNS/DNF and a few results that maybe could have been higher? e.g. Hollie DNS this

Really pleased for Yannick. He's worked so hard over so long, but never quite managed to pull it off. Can he do it again at WOC?

With the bonus seconds running out at 10th position it wasn't a great surprise not to see Thierry and Fabian Hertner this evening. (Hollie is in good company.) Pity really because part of the point is to show the best known orienteers.

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
Article just posted on IOF website by Clive Allen saying that Matthias Kyburz won, with no mention whatsoever of Yannick. Martin Regborn seems to have vanished from 4th place as well.

Yannick said in his interview that unfortunately he will not be taking part in the rest of World Cup 1.

That shouldnt be a surprise - he's got track and road aims and really focuses on sprint orienteering.
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
The women's race was really exciting with small mistakes deciding the medal places right up to the end. It didn't look particularly hard navigation but lots of subtle route choices and seconds in it.
Congrats to Tess on a top 20 in her first comeback international. Just a couple of wobbles in the middle of the course cost her a top 10, but she managed a cleaner run on the day than the other Brits.

The originally missing runners were starters 39 and 40 (the last two). I've heard from Clive who has confirmed he was working from a results list produced just too early, and apologises for any confusion.
IOF website has now been updated with the correct results to confirm Yannick's historic victory.

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
I was studying the GPS route choices from yesterday and paired up Tessa's routes with Maja Alm's and paired up Jonny's and Chris's routes. In almost every case Maja and Jonny were taking the right hand routes and Tessa and Chris the left hand routes. It is probably pure coincidence, but unconscious bias might be occurring. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this before and studied it further.

I wonder if it is linked to driving on the left vs driving on the right.

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
Ha - we should have set up WOC2015 with a left hand bias. Interesting to note the sequence of Sprint Races - this is exactly what we wanted for WOC 2015 but bowed to pressure from some teams (including GB) and had the Sprint Qualifier in advance of the Sprint Relay (it meant extending WOC a day, more complex arena moves, more cost, more volunteer time)
