Okay, so after controlling today, my SI Air is giving out an intermittent green flash. Does that always happen and I've just not noticed...or is there something's wrong?
If the latter, does it stop eventually (SI Air contactless wasn't enabled for the race)?

Re: Flashing SI Air
I expect one of the SI gurus will correct me but i thought the occasional (10s?) faint green flash means it is in contactless mode: you need to find a finish station to switch it off!

Had a speedy response from Martin at SI, so in case anyone else has the same problem...
The green LED is the heartbeat of the SIAC and it
flashes intermittently when the SIAC is switched on. If you dip it in a
FINISH or a SIAC OFF station it will switch the card off, otherwise it will
switch off approx. 24 hours after its last use, which uses a little extra
battery.
Still not sure how contactless has been switched on when none of the controls were SI enabled!?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure, but I believe a SIAC SI Card gets switched on whenever it is CHECKED, irrespective of whether contactless punching is being used at an event or not.

Yes that is correct. The reverse is also true cf my hapless run at Edinburgh City race two years ago having failed to check at the start

So does that mean that the battery is used at every event, not just contactless events?
Does the card flash and beep at non-contactless units as well?
To oblivion and beyond....

Hence why I now have 2 dibbers: one where SI Air is enabled and my old one where it's not enabled. This creates a bit of a problem as Fabian4 only remembers one SI number.
I've had to change my SI number at download for a number of events this year which creates extra work for the computing team. Maybe an update to Fabian (and SI entries) would be useful?

Either on page 2 Fabian change the SI number each time, or as I have done create 2 profiles and delete the one you don't need on page 3 with any family members who are not competing.

Yes and yes.
Is it possible that the SI card flashes and beeps before the unit in contactless mode?
And if so can it flash and beep before registering a time?
That might explain why I keep getting disqualified in local contactless events.
To oblivion and beyond....

Could also explain BOC relay.
I think I have seen this question posed before, but not a definitive answer.
If the flash occurs before the visit is registered that would be a significant design flaw (or bug)

....
I didn't think the base unit flashes/beeps or even registers anything for a contactless punch. I thought it was acting as a beacon - so one-way comms.

Yes, your card is still active - and hence consuming battery power.
For the competitor it would be switched off by a Finish or Download unit. I can see how, as the controller you could bypass those

Re: Flashing SI Air
The response from SportIdent is that the a SIAC card in contactless mode only beeps/flashes after a successful write to the card (i.e. that is the sequence of events). And of course if it is used in contactless mode (i.e. 'swiping' not dibbing) then the control unit does not flash or beep at all
