When I go on, it's in 'places gained' order, and I can't seem to find anyway of changing it

The ranking lists are all over the place - not in numerical order with points scored appear to be completely random

Looks like it's in ascending order of BOF number. We are all doomed.

It would appear that if you avoid the BO front page and go straight to the pages you want you don't need to be logged in. It's not that clever.
Quite true, and even more perverse - if you can view the page, it ought to be linked to. After all, mightn't someone's friend (not a BO member) want to see their ranking? It really does give the impression of something being developed "on the fly" rather than a properly planned job.

I don't know the actual reasoning behind this, but here's an alternative perspective that makes sense to me... The not logged in view is what non-members and newcomers see. Let's not scare them off with all the detail that we use by bombarding them with ranking lists etc. But members probably won't be logged in at all times, and might find having to log in every time they want to view the ranking list annoying - so why not make the url accessible to those with the link without logging in.
Of course, I'm sure it would be possible to require anyone wanting to view the ranking list to (become a member and) log in every time they access it...

Ignoring the fact that this 'feature' isn't working, the implementation is seriously shoddy with security problems. Ticking the remember me box sets two extra cookies:
- bof_user_name
- bof_pass_word
These contain base64 encoded versions of your username (e.g. am9obg==) and password (e.g. T3IxM250MzNyMW5n). You can decode them at https://www.base64decode.org/ to check.
The "Secure" and "HttpOnly" attributes on the cookies are not set. The cookies could be sent over an unencrypted connection, or accessed by JavaScript (e.g. injected malicious script) running on website. Both methods could allow someone to steal login details.
Once you have logged in initially, username and password aren't even needed for a remember me feature. (If it is built correctly)
I'm not sure the developers know about security good practices or building websites.
Make sure the password you use on the BOF website is not used for anything else important.

The previous website did this perfectly well with it's member and non-member view. I'm all for updating the look of the website but why reinvent the wheel when it comes to the functionality, unless something can or needs to be done better. Babies and bathwater spring to mind.

Re: New BOF Website
At present the find a club section is cumbersome, multiple clicks needed to find a club in your area. It's better than last week when a newcomer was presented with a table full of club abbreviations that even most orienteers would not understand.
A better way to find a club would be geolocation, based on the postcode of the newcomer. Offer 2, with distances to the centre of that clubs "area".
One thing that needs ironing out is the inclusion of Closed clubs in the list, GMOA is an organisation/JV run by MDOC/SELOC that maintains over 50 POCs but you can't join it. There will be others no doubt,

Re: New BOF Website
I'm delighted to see that the new algorithm has placed our Will at the top of the national rankings. In his words: "I'm very proud. It took a lot of hard work and apathy to get to this point."
Could I suggest that this would be a good moment for CompassSport to recalculate its annual table of club performance? With two runners in the top 20, there's a tiny possibility that SMOC might move off our regular place nailed to the bottom.

Halfway along the road we have to go,
I found myself obscured in a great forest,
Bewildered, and I knew I had lost the way

King Penguin wrote:Mrs H wrote:OK! Now I'm angry! There are no coloured dots on Ollie O'Brien's events map. It's the only fixture list that matters.
BO changes (retrospective recalculation of ranking points for the last 12 months) killed Ollie's excellent ranking points graph and athlete comparison.
I suspect it is more likely Ollie will be able to recover from this one, but it will still take time and effort.
http://oobrien.com/map/ is now showing coloured dots again!
Technical note: The issue was related to the BOF website being on (I think) a new server, which was encoding ampersands in a different way, which broke my regex.
Re the ranking site, the problem was that if BOF recalculated every single person's ranking for event event over a year, every time an event was uploaded, then to get these changes would have meant querying every course/event for a year, every time. This would have resulting in half a million webpage requests to BOF each time, which they would probably not appreciate (and would take several days to execute anyway - by which point the information would be out of date again).
Stop talking, start running.

Thanks for fixing it Ollie
It's the best fixture tool in lots of ways, but as someone who cycles to most events, seeing where the coloured dots are is invaluable for my planning.

Re: New BOF Website
From Mike's News
Finally!
Website and the next update
The ranking algorithm is being updated on the live website early in September. The changes also include additional views of results and rankings to enable users to drill down into the results/rankings and make the system more interactive.
As a part of the update the new algorithm will be run across the results from this year which will mean some past ranking scores being changed, hopefully the anomalies and exceptional scores awarded to some competitors will be removed during this process.
The changes to the algorithm are to address these anomalies and exceptional results and to tidy up a few related matters. The changes include:
• Outliers (exceptional results) are included in the initial calculations for the course ranking parameters but then the runners whose score would be more than 100 points different from their previous average are ignored for the second final calculation of ranking points.
• The rule that there must be 10 previously ranked runners on a course before it can be ranked is now unnecessary and has been replaced by the rule that if there are fewer than 8 non-outlier scores on a course the course will be excluded from ranking points being awarded. It is understood that this will make it hard for competitors to judge whether there will be sufficient people on a course to ensure the course receives ranking points.
• The calculation of the ranking parameters for a course is on the averages of the runner's scores and not on all of the separate scores.
• The various parameters involved in the calculation are now recalculated on the same basis and included in the second pass of the calculation.
• The algorithm calculations no longer run immediately after a set of event results are uploaded; the calculations are run as a ‘day batch’ early in the morning. This overcomes a lot of calculation time that was wasted when multiple sets of results for an event were uploaded on the same day – now only the most recent upload of the results for an event will be used to run the calculation.
The changes to the participant experience include:
• More linking between results, people, scores, etc to allow drilling down into the results and scores.
• The data can be imbedded into websites but drill down is visible only to members.
• A basic graph of a member’s points over time is available.
• The Rankings age class view enables drill down.
• The club ranking points page will allow drill down.
As always it is possible that there will be some initial problems when the system is made live early in September, hopefully any problems will be few and far between.
