Re: WMOC2017
By popular acclaim, probably the most tricky Sprint courses any of us has ever run. I certainly thought so - arguably too difficult to use for a major race perhaps??
Today's Sprint Final was much more like the expected standard and the terrain was definitely worthy of a World Championships.

133 mispunched & 20 disqualified in the finals - were these courses also very tricky?

Re: WMOC2017
I think the majority of the dq may have come me in the courses entering the covered area from the north where there was a dead end which actually could be got through but led into a building. There was a Marshall taking competitor numbers - a wee bit unlucky as inadvertent cheating at worst and it was clearly anticipated. Might have been fairer to use tape as they had around some of the oob.
Regards the number of mp. Yes it was tricky. Lots of controls very close together. Very tricky to interpret underpass midway caught lots out. Not as technical as the heats though which were really tough. I'd an 8min k in the middle of my heat!

Re: WMOC2017
As one of those dqed I feel very unfairly treated. It was only when I looked at the enlarged PDF map that I realised what I had done - leg 3-4 on M65B. Going through the area I checked with others that we thought we were ok. I just couldn't read the detail due to poor eyesight - perhaps I need a better magnifier!
I'm going to talk to someone tomorrow though, as a Planner and Controller myself, I know how difficult it is to anticipate these situations. However, as andypat says, if it was anticipated perhaps some tape or one of their 'No orienteers' signs would have been good.
Otherwise, a first rate event ...

This looks straightforward on the map
(not a criticism of you - I'm capable of stuffing up much simpler courses - but I'm intrigued to know where the trap was)

Google StreetView link here https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@-36.8515 ... 56!6m1!1e1 shows the entrance to the canopy area from the north. I wonder if people didn't go up the stairs to the 1st floor level, and went into the lower level?

Well it looks like you should go up the stairs through the area marked run- though grey take the second left out into the area with the noughts and crosses and down the steps to the control - was this not the case?
(I'm still struggling to comprehend the fact that Yvette Baker is running W50 and impressed that Nick managed to get from the JK to WMOC - did anyone else manage that?)

Couldn't you just run around the outside?
There's also a 'Geoff Peck' in M65!

Re: WMOC2017
Yes, the route looks obvious on the PDF - it was far less so on the actual map. I had to use a magnifier later to see the thick black lines at the ends of the corridor. The connecting line drew my, and others', attention to that route. I suppose there was a sense of cutting the corner, even though there was nothing to be gained from doing so.
I have never been DSQ before and still feel somewhat that I was tricked - you have to have been there, seen the map and my difficulty in reading it, to understand my feelings about it. I was one of seven DSQ on M65B and there were others on other courses who probably made the same mistake - not least the woman from Finland who asked me whether we were ok.

The courses were tricky, but I don't think they were unfairly so. They weren't as tricky as the heats.
There were a few bits of the campus where I can understand that it's really difficult to map, but that's also what makes it such a good orienteering challenge.
The area wasn't embargoed until 6am on the day of the race, so over the last couple of days there have been plenty of orienteers going for a walk around the campus, checking things out. That certainly helped me on several of the legs yesterday. It felt strange being allowed to do it, but I'm glad I did.

Not to me
It seems reasonable that since the area where the lines cross is marked in bounds, that you can go there. Otherwise they'd have mapped it olive green. Then there isn't enough space to fit in the dots to show the underpass, so maybe its hidden?

I'm struggling to properly understand this discussion of the map, even with unlimited time and enlarging, leaves me even more impressed by the GBR medallists - very well done.

Re: WMOC2017
Guess the control description (M70A sprint final course).
I note that one of the changes in ISOM2017 that I don't think has been highlighted in the New Map Standard thread would make this mapping non-conformant if also adopted in ISSOM.
