What a great weekend; many thanks to all who travelled to the beautiful Pembrokeshire National park to support our event and for the many positive comments on the day and emails received since - it was a pleasure to plan a Welsh League in support of the UK Urban league at Tenby... There are very few mapped areas to choose from in West Wales but thankfully Peter Seward kindly updated his original 1:15,000 map successfully; the woodland area was constantly changing during the months leading up to the event and at one point I thought we might lose all the remaining ‘runnable white’ sections that remained; the 'novice' map amendments in the woodland section were all my own! Many thanks to all the volunteer officials and helpers who ensured that the event was a success; especially the ex-TROT members who, having been away from the sport for 20 years or more were soon back in the swing of registration, starts and for some, competing again and enjoying first time experience of electronic punching, split times and subsequently, routegadget! Also thanks to Alan Hoff our organiser whose efficiency throughout was much appreciated and to EMIT UK (Allan and Simon Farrington) for the Entries, timings and results. Finally, an immense vote of gratitude for the Controller, Chris Huthwaite - without his attention to detail, advice and support the courses would not have been nearly as good as they were. And having checked the controls early on Saturday he was back to assist Alan with the car-parking.
What could we have done better? Not much in my opinion however, I think a Short Green course was needed which, had we planned it, might have resulted in an even higher level of entries. Apologies to those who encountered the new strand of barbed wire that appeared along the northern section of the woodland plantation; it had been positioned within the last three weeks however, I should have put in a temporary style and marked it on the blank maps in the start lanes. Whilst writing this I have received an email from Pat the farmer who found that his fields and fences had been left in immaculate condition; he has invited us back… Thanks All.

Re: Pembrokeshire Weekend 20/21 May 17
Over four years ago I mentioned to Alistair that I thought that Tenby would make a good urban venue, his response was… ‘if you commit to it count me in’… nearly three years later the agreed dates were fast approaching.
The first issue was mapping … thankfully Ben Mitchell SBOC was available and he also designed the excellent flyers and Facebook site which undoubtedly helped raise interest and entry numbers. The second issue was how busy Tenby can get so we made an early decision to switch the Urban to the Sunday morning; the third issue was the tide-times and again a huge thank you to Alistair who along with his father were put under a little too much time-pressure to meet a 0930 hrs start-time… especially after the ex-TROT reunion on Saturday night! Appreciation also to Allan Farrington for controlling the event; the slight delay to the starts could have been much longer had he, Alistair and Pat Powell not put in a herculean effort to double check that all the controls had been switched on. Finally, thanks to all the on the day helpers and marshals who kindly gave up most of their morning to ensure both the safety of the juniors and update members of the public who stopped to ask about the competition. We look forward to the next event – more of Tenby North Beach and residential areas of the town with perhaps a return to the cliffs and caves... if the high tide allows!

Tenby Urban Race
Judging by the BOF results page it was so good everyone ran 12 times
Not sure if I'm more impressed by Peter Bray's 1442 points or by the 8 year old who was only 6 minutes slower - I guess there can't have been any road crossings...

And people who entered Tenby but didn't start have been allocated 0 points in the UK Urban league ! Why does it matter ? Well, if it comes to a tie-break at the end of the year that 0 might count against us.

BAOC is one of a few clubs that are allocated to all associations so although the races were registered with the Welsh OA they appear in all 12 association tabs. At least it prevented the race registration problems that arise when a club of one association runs a race on a different associations area.

Pembrokeshire Weekend 24/25 Sep 22
Entries for the Pembrokeshire weekend 24/25 September are increasing daily however we would like more of you to join us in the wonderful Pembrokeshire Coast national park. The Day 1 area on the Saturday afternoon for the Middle distance courses has never been used for orienteering - the beautiful Stackpole warren & Bosherston lily ponds which has been mapped by Ben Mitchell of SBOC; he's also planning the courses controlled by David May.
Day 2 is the UK Urban league race at Tenby; the map has been extended and revised by Ben. The old Castle town has only been used once for urban orienteering back in May 17. The start and finish is from North Beach. Full details are on the SBOC website and entries are via pre-entries: https://pre-entries.app/
