I'm just browsing applications for the Athlete Support Fund - it's clear that a lot of junior elites are owning up to the fact that they're fit but can't "hold it together" round an orienteering course and are seeking support for self-help technical camps. For this I respect their honesty and decision to work on such weaknesses.
Sadly, all applications so far are applying to travel abroad to work on their technical skills.
I can understand athletes seeking big races abroad where small technical mistakes will result in relatively big position losses.
But I don't understand why folk aren't sorting out quality technical camps in the UK also. OR maybe they are and I just don't know......
Anyway - one suggestion from me. the UKEL events around Aberfoyle - 1st weekend in April...... Aberfoyle Memorial Hall has toilets and showers and allows overnight stays and full hire of the hall for a reasonable charge - why not organize for athletes to stay here over the weekend and continue their technical training by staying for a further week and training in the surrounding forests? (There are numerous other halls within 10 mins drive also).
The Trossachs, South Achray and Fairy Knowe & Doon Hill are all very close and group training for under 20 people requires no FC permission (you'd be wise to register your training activity with BO for insurance purposes and seek permission from the local clubs for use of the map). I'm pretty sure you could have a fab training camp in this area for less that £100 for the week (excluding travel).
I'd like to think somebody has already had this thought....

Maybe they just want a holiday? When I was running Elite (don't ask how long ago!) I seem to remember lots of training weekends up in Scotland - training Saturday and then a Classic/SOL Sunday....

Re: Lack of Forest Technical Training
Maybe people are intending to do UK-based technical training weekends but they aren't appearing on the application to the Support Fund? They are relatively easy to organise at short notice when you find out you're free, but it's not so easy to have them planned out and costed for the whole year in January.
I like your Aberfoyle idea - happy to help plan courses if anyone is needed.
