Re: SIAC touch free
We tested this ahead of WOC, and 1-1.5 sec per control is the typical saving vs stop-punch-start.

And probably less for those whose orienteering technique involves: stop - punch - take a breather - look at map - work out where to go next - take bearing - start

Re: SIAC touch free
I'm not sure if this adds to the debate or not, but on Saturday at the urban league event I was told at the start that SI air was not being used (to be fair this was in part a jokey reference to the recent controversy rather than a specific statement). As far I I could tell though the units were switched on for SI air as my SI Card was beeping before I put it in at each control. This is a situation I'd not come across before and I was quite confused. I continued to dib as normal (since I wasnt confident that I could get away with swiping) but I couldnt tell if the SI units were beeping as my own card was beeping first.
I actually lost a few seconds at the first control as I went back to dib it again to check what had happened!
I guess the SOA units may have been pre-switched on for SI air but the club werent aware. Anyhow I guess the point is it can actually be a little confusing if you are using an SI air card but expecting to dib normal units and thats not what happens.

Sorry, Andy. Some of the club knew that the units were Air+ enabled, but, apparently, the message did not reach those on the start.

Thanks Robin. As you might have seen - it didnt affect the outcome
I guess its another thing to think about as an organiser. I could see it being more of an issue in a sprint distance if you werent aware as a competitor.

Re: SIAC touch free
Although I'm a keen orienteer I baulk at the costs involved in having the latest equipment. So while I notice that some orienteers have bought each new kind of SI card, including buying ones with special colours or numbers, I've never bought myself an SI card in my life. (Nor an Emit brikke for that matter.) I'm still using the one given to me by the lovely Alex Wing when he retired from orienteering 15 years ago. I suppose this will finally become obsolete one day, but till then I'm still not bothered by all the techno faffery that goes on around me, and I just hope that when we settle on a new system it's a sensible one.
