Re: MapAnt
That is incredible! I wonder if there's the right sort of data around with the right sort of licenses to do that for the UK?
But... wow. That's seriously impressive.

I am also impressed but I am wondering how accurate the runnability is on the map. There are some small areas of green but I presume it has not really been put together from any actual survey on the ground. As I have never orienteered in Finland I don't know if the forests are nearly all 'white'.

Re: MapAnt
I guess the green is merely used for lower trees (using the DSM-DTM method to measure heights) and thus is not completely accurate.
Most Finnish forest is "white" (though quite a lot is tough going with blueberry/marsh and even brash).

If only we had the Lidar coverage and digital map data we could map the whole of Aberdeenshire and make the best O-map in Britain!

Just a wee bit thin on the Lidar cover, but it does cover much of the best bits, i.e. Deeside

If you've not come across it already, the team making the map have a page saying how they did it here.
One fun statistic is that it took three weeks for 100 computers to do the (parallel) processing required!
