The final weekend of the UK Urban League is coming up, with races in Oxford and Norwich. Oxford has attracted a bumper entry (349 to date), while over 200 are making the trip to Norwich. The results in some of the age categories are already decided, while others remain wide open.
In the Young Juniors, Barney Steventon-Barnes (SUFFOC) could in theory draw level with Joel Taylor (TVOC) with two victories, but Barney is not entered for either Oxford or Norwich so it looks like Joel's brick. Similarly for the girls: one win would put Sarah Darley on a perfect 500 points, joining Ella May Rush; if Ella May also ran then Sarah would be ahead on tie-break. But neither has entered Oxford or Norwich and Maja Robertson can't quite reach the top, so Sarah's brick from last year seems to be heading for Bristol.
In the Juniors, one more good result from Alfie Bullus (OD) will win him the trophy ahead of Adam Conway (GO): revenge for the reverse outcome last year. And with just two junior women entrants at Oxford, Ashleigh Howells (LEI) realistically just needs to finish even if Aimee Darley and a host of friends get late entries.
Leon Foster (AIRE) has clocked up another impressive victory on M Open and doesn't need to bring his brick down from Leeds. In the absence of entries from Kirstin Maxwell and Carolyn Hindle, Tereza Rush (BOK) appears to have secured the W Open title.
The Veterans categories are straightforward: Martin Ward (SYO) retains his M Vets brick and Jane Anthony (SROC, W60!) does likewise for the women.
The Men Supervet category is highly competitive. John Embrey (DEE) leads with five victories and two second places; one more win will secure the trophy. Two wins for Keith Tonkin (GO), who lies third, would move him ahead of John. First and second for Keith (with John not winning) would give Keith an overall win on tie-break. Gavin Clegg (QO) lies second; two wins for Gavin would put him level with John on points and ahead on tie-break. All to play for!
In WSV, Carol Edwards (TVOC) has won her last five races after a slow start but still trails Lindsey Knox (RR), who has four second places to back up her three wins. Two wins for Lindsey with Carol second would put them equal on both points and tie-break, but one win for Carol will suffice whatever Lindsey does. Christine Kiddier (GO) is slightly too far back to challenge.
Although various pursuers can get close, none can catch Ultravet Martin Wilson (BKO). Heather Smithard (KFO) needs two wins to overhaul Miriam Rosen (SROC) and retain her WUV brick, but the smart money must be on Miriam retaining her lead.
As well as the bricks, there are Ultrasport vouchers for the category winners and a special bonus voucher, courtesy of Ultrasport, for the closest runner-up. I hope we don't have to split the vouchers!

I think it's even tighter in MSV.
If Keith gets 1st and 2nd and John does not win, I make them equal on both points and tie-break, each beating the other 4 times in head-to-heads.

Oxford results available on our website and uploaded to the UKUL website. I'll let someone else consider the variations permutations that can arise in Norwich tomorrow.
Hope you all enjoyed the day. I'd appreciate any feedback, good and bad, to pass onto future organisers/planners.

Re: UK Urban League - final weekend
Definitely degree quality planning today. I doubt many didn’t get caught out.
I certainly wasn’t the only one attempting to get to 163 by punt!
Please pass on my many thanks to all concerned.
I wondered why the final details only appeared on one of my computers – it seems there are 2 OUOC web sites!
http://www.users.ox.ac.uk which is the old one, and the new one http://www.ouoc.org.uk which had the final details loaded on Thursday. If you search for OUOC you get the latter, but if you have OUOC previously as a favourite you get the old site (although the new one points to the old address!).
Cheers
Robin

Jamie,
I thought the planning was excellent and really enjoyed it - many thanks to all involved for a great event.
One minor comment for the planner was placing of 2 numbers with white boarders on my course made it difficult to determine whether there was a solid building in the way or not - very minor point that did not detract from my enjoyment...
hop fat boy, hop!

Two excellent days, events and courses, despite all the travelling.
Oxford was good, and Norwich was even better.
Just need to ge faster for next year.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Norwich event - thanks to all concerned. However I had more trouble getting my SI Card into the control box holes than any other urban event I've done this year. Why clubs don't use wooden boxes to house the controls (as used by LOG)

Tend to agree although the downside of the base plate is that it means you cant fit the unit to a Tbar for forest O even with the adapter.

Re: UK Urban League - final weekend
Congratulations to all the 2016 UK Urban League winners:
MYJ Joel Taylor (TVOC)
WYJ Ella May Rush (BOK)
MJ Alfie Bullus (OD)
WJ Ashleigh Howells (LEI)
MO Leon Foster (AIRE)
WO Tereza Rush (BOK)
MV Martin Ward (SYO)
WV Jane Anthony (SROC)
MSV Keith Tonkin (GO)
WSV Carol Edwards (TVOC)
MUV Martin Wilson (BKO)
WUV Miriam Rosen (SROC)
Lindsey Knox (RR) was the closest runner-up, just one point behind Carol in the WSV category.
Thank you to all the clubs for hosting (and contributing to the prize fund), to Nigel Benham at BML Print and Nick Barrable at CompassSport magazine for providing free publicity, to Ian Kevan at Ultrasport for providing the extra voucher for the closest runner-up, to Mike Shires (TVOC) for the publicity design, and to all the volunteers who distributed postcards all round the country.
We do have some unfinished business though. I trust that intra-club transfers from Chloe Potter to Tereza Rush and from Imogen Wilson to Ashleigh Howells can take place without me, but I'm seeking trophies from William Martland (EPOC, MYJ) and Adam Conway (GO, MJ) to be passed to their new owners.

Yes, thanks to all of them, but also thanks to Roger for coordinating the league (and providing the results website).

Likewise, thoroughly enjoyed the event; lots of variety and very little "dead running". Also perhaps the most unusual control description I've seen - "building, underneath" - wish I'd read that more carefully, it would have saved me some time!
I too had a bit of trouble getting my SI card into one or two of the controls, in one case I think this was because the string holding the kite was threaded through the hole as well as the gripple. For all that, I still find SI far better than Emit in urban events.

Re: UK Urban League - final weekend
Although Norwich was the final event of the UK league it was only the penultimate one for the Southern England one. Aficionados of the Brighton City Race will know that fighting other competitors to punch at the early controls, and taking in the advice of the helpful pub-going locals is part of the charm of the event. Some of you will be disappointed to learn therefore that the event will be using SIAir this year, and will spend more time in newly-mapped areas than in the main city centre.

Re: UK Urban League - final weekend
Thanks to Roger also on behalf of the SOUL series who rely on his site for hosting.
No Scots winners this year - hard lines Lindsey!
Maybe next year.
PS despite some gallant efforts from Spookster previously and John Embrey this time we've never yet had to let a SOUL trophy go south (EUOC notwithstanding).
SOUL series for next year under care of Pat Squire looking like a bumper year for events so keep an eye out!
