Routegadget question
Something I've noticed recently is that there seems to be a significant variation between events in how thick the overprint lines and circles for courses appear; compare, for example, the AIRE event at Shipley and Saltaire with the SARUM one at Salisbury - the overprint on the latter appearing so light as to be almost invisible until you zoom in. Both of these had maps of the same physical size and scale. While it's possible to change the thickness under "settings", it seems strange that there is such a large variation; can anyone explain it, please?

Different map image resolutions - if you put a very high resolution image then the lines are smaller, and vice versa.

To give a rough idea. The Shipley jpeg file is 594KB and Salisbury 8352KB so about 14 times as big, suggesting higher resolution.

Re: Routegadget question
Thanks, I thought it had to be something like that. Maybe there should be a guideline on resolution so that things display fairly consistently.

Re: Routegadget question
Early recommendations to stick to less than 500kb are a bit out of date, but for those of us on Rural broadband, 8MB is a real pain. I just checked Salisbury,, more than 40 seconds to upload the map.
Other things to consider:
* There is little point in going above 200 dpi. It just increases the file size and makes the course overprint very small, without any useful increase in image quality.
* If you do use JPG then set the quality down to 50% or lower. Again this doesn't have a great impact on image quality, but does reduce the file size.
The User Guide recommended size of 200-500KB ......
Another side effect of too large an image is that the control circles drawn by RG are very small. Looking back at previous 6 Days maps a file size around 700KB and 2000px is about average.
Edited - took a few minutes to research this, a bit out of date now Paul has posted himself, but still valid
I generate most maps using OCAD. Recommended settings are to export as a GIF at 150 or 200 dpi. This is OK even for very detailed maps, and gives reasonable files sizes.Simon Errington (RG2 author)

Re: Routegadget question
The guidelines that Paul quoted are the place to start. A detailed A3 urban map GIF at 200dpi will be a bit over 1Mb, and the majority of maps will be well under 500kb. The 2016 OMM maps that Paul has just posted are all around 1Mb.
I'm thinking of including a warning in the RG2 manager if you try to use a file over some (as yet undetermined) size.
As a user you can adjust a lot of display settings by clicking on the "configuration options" icon (the cog in the top right of the screen). This includes control circle size, overprint width and route width.

Re: Routegadget question
I confess I usually upload cropped maps - sorry Simon; I hadn't spotted your preference for the whole area until now.
One excuse is that an increasing number of our planners prefer Purple Pen over Condes or OCAD, and they just click "create RouteGadget files" in the menu. This produces a gif cropped to the area covered by courses, and that's what they send me.
