HOC are putting on a weekend of events in October in the Malvern area.
On Saturday 22nd October there is an urban event in Malvern, part of the UKUL and WMUL. There is quite a bit of climb on the Open courses but not much on the Ultra Veterans!
On Sunday 23rd October there is an event on Castlemorton Common, a deceptively tricky area.
Both events are level C.
Entries for this weekend are now open on Fabian.

Map numbers for the urban event will be sent to the printers tomorrow (Sunday) evening. If you haven't entered yet and wish to book a map, email your name, club, age class (e.g. WSV) and course number to me: chairman at harlequins.org.uk

Re: Malvern Variations
Thanks for all of the positive comments about the courses over the last two days and about the accuracy of yesterday's map.
The results of both events are here: http://harlequins.org.uk/
Routegadget for the urban is here: http://www.hoc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/
The planner of the urban is happy to see that the two runners on the M Open course who have so far put their routes on chose different routes for many of the legs.
Routegadget for Castlemorton Common will follow presently.

Some intricate legs ... but are you allowed to leave the mapped area?

Re: Malvern Variations
I don't know.
Some of my family members have done so in the past (due to incompetence on those occasions and not on an urban event).

Having just read an awful lot of the 101 page BOF document Rules of Orienteering, I have been unable to find any mention of running off the mapped area.

Re: Malvern Variations
Good to see that both days are now on RouteGadget, but I don't see any links to RG on the HOC website yet so many competitors won't find them ...

It's on the menu bar along the top but is very missable. That's why I put the link further up this thread.
Here it is again:

This discussion seems very similar in some ways to one that I read about "do you have to go to the start kite", with people having differing views. In my BOF Rules reading yesterday, I was interested to come across a line that said "The map issue point
should be such that all competitors will visit the start kite." That was a new one on me!

So it is ...
... but if you go straight to the "Events & Results" page, which I do by Googling for HOC Results (or equivalent), you bypass the home page and the menu bar no longer displays links to RG.

I made the decision that you probably aren't, which is why I (reluctantly) tuned right rather than left along the road at the top of the steps. I suppose you must be though - people often run off the map and they aren't disqualifed.
Anyway, it's a rule of orienteering that there must be at least one mistake at every event, so it's good that in this case it was such a minor one.

Re: Malvern Variations
Was it clear on the ground that there was a viable route by going off the map? Or was it a gamble/required local knowledge?
