Re: MWIS "set to close"
Penny-wise pound foolish for Scotland as a whole. The costs down the line of rescues and worse, make this a small investment. Does anyone have a hotline to the SNP!? Cynically and seriously, it could be a great flag waving opportunity for a politician to step in, lauding the importance of the mountains and tourism to Scotland

Re: MWIS "set to close"
Thanks for the info - I've written to the three addresses given plus all nine(!) of my MSPs. I have always found the forecasts extremely accurate and no longer go to the hills if their forecasts are poor. This withdrawal of the funding puts lives at risk including those of the Mountain Rescue teams. SportScotland should be supporting safety programmes, not the opposite.

They provide a good service, it's hard to fault them
But anyone with a bit of mountain experience can get the necessary information from the met office.

Never used it - I tend to rely on "yr.no" and then trust my instinct once on the hills/woods.

If you're in woods then you're not high enough for MWIS!!!
I have plenty of mountain experience, and have no idea how to get things like freezing level from the Met Office.
The MWIS saves lives, or perhaps prevents deaths anyhow.
One bad accident probably costs more than MWIS's annual budget.

-1 deg/100m if it's dry. -1/160m if it's raining.

Re: MWIS "set to close"
Not sure if there's some spin going on here ...
MWIS are worried about losing funding, but Sport Scotland appear to be saying that there will continue to be a reliable mountain weather forecast. So it may just be that it will no longer be through MWIS.
eg with the Met Office losing its multi-million pound BBC contract it may be more keen to pick up other business, and be offering better terms ...
