So what do people think of it?
I am not sure it fits any particular remit? It dropped onto my doormat in Sept and had page after page about the JK, that was held in March (7 months ago), and so it continued about events that had been held. So what is Focus? Is it a look back at the last 3 - 6 months of stuff that has happened for people to remember (or wish to forget).
Where does the word Focus come into it?
Should it not be a look forward to whet your appetite and get you excited about the next 3 - 6 months. Don't get me wrong it is very well written with excellent photos etc but just confused about why it is produced aka what purpose does it serve it members, and should it not go back to drawing board and decide its purpose and therefore content.

Re: Focus Magazine
Personally although I always have a look at it, I cant think of anything that I've gained from it that I couldnt have got elsewhere or done without. I really wonder how many juniors read the junior bit.

Re: Focus Magazine
I was excited to read that we have a really strong team going to the World Championships. I wonder how they'll get on?

Re: Focus Magazine
I think its late. Its the summer edition, released in nearly Autumn..
On Page 30 there is a small list of UKOL events. It would be nice if they could of dropped some of the JK stuff and included a few more plugs for smaller events coming up...
I wonder what the cost is to create this magazine? I wonder if there was an option to "opt out" and receive it electronically...possibly a smart option for the future...reducing costs.

I understand there is a really good article about the Scottish Orienteering Championships held at Balmoral. Hopefully this is where the British Orienteering Championships will be staged in 2018.

Re: Focus Magazine
Virtually nothing in it that hasn't already been covered by CompassSport except the usual plugs for Explorer events - the magazine is superfluous, certainly as a hard copy.

Re: Focus Magazine
I always assumed it was a glossy production aimed at impressing funding bodies and other NGBs rather than being useful to orienteers.

They must have edited out the bit about the Scottish Relay Champs...

Re: Focus Magazine
I like Focus but think it struggles as it either covers the areas covered by Compass Sport and is then inevitably compared to that magazine, or it does things differently and then is criticised for being different.
I agree coverage of forthcoming events would be more useful than reviews of past ones but have valued coverage of the World Champs and World Cup events.
In reality it is the only contact most BOF members will have with BOF and is therefore a useful communication tool. E-mail is all too easy to skip or delete but a paper copy might be flicked through even if it goes straight in the recycling bin.
Like most magazines producing it is likely to be a thankless task for the editor struggling to get people to make contributions.
One vote for keeping Focus in paper format.

But it does cost 5 times as much as a year's BO membership.

I guess the key difference being paying for Compasssport is optional...and of course everytime I orienteer I'm paying BO for something!

Yes, well I suppose it gives Mike Hamilton a chance to have another go at the membership.
