Re: cheating at oringen.....
That's why my Chasing Start time on Friday was brought forward by 15 minutes or so! What was just enough time to get from completing the TrailO to my FootO start turned into a 14 min late start. And the start officials did offer to try to get me a late start time - if I had realised the real reason for my tardiness - that my start time had changed between the evening before and that morning - I would have waited to try!
That also accounts for why there are two disqualifcation in H55K!
The ORingen results give the start and finish times for each runner. On days 2-4 he had started in the last 10 minutes of the permissible window.

Re: cheating at oringen.....
It seems bizarre to do that in your 50s. I could see the attraction as an M/W 21 trying to get in to the national squad but cheating to win M55S seems odd. Plus you'd think if he was a regular class winner people would recognise him and he'd be caught out when he went up to the start with the wrong name although short course winners may be less well known than long course ones and the o ringen is big but there are a lot of Fins there.
Hope he's not banned as he's obviously dedicated to orienteering, just a bit pot and medal preoccupied.

Ehhhhh.... serious????
Bet all the drug cheats are dedicated to their sport... so your logic suggests they get off!!!
Cheating is cheating is cheating....
A few obvious cases like this have happened in the UK... I remember one incident at the Scottish Score at Dollarbank..... DQ.
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Re: cheating at oringen.....
If one of my club mates was cheating at M55S I'd not be wanting him kicked out. I'd be concerned about his priorities and mental health. Everyone would know he had cheated and he'd probably find it hard to orienteer again anyway. Different if an M/W21E athlete but cheating at M55S seems more sad and desperate than evil to me.
Obviously you disqualify him from that race and tell people why he was disqualified so he's not inclined to do it again but people can be stupid sometimes.

Perhaps skipping a control and getting away with it (somehow) is stupid but cheating such as this at O-ringen with 2 entries is not "being stupid" it is premeditated blatant cheating. Lifetime ban, I would say - and pass on details of him to other sports so they can ban him as well if they don't like cheats either.

Re: cheating at oringen.....
For me it would depend on what they were like as a person, not just the fact that it's premeditated cheating. I like most orienteers.
If he generally came across as selfish and devious, never helped at events and was a pain in the bum if he was on any committees and it was thought he'd cheated for a while and was a habitual liar I would favour strong sanctions.
If on the other hand he was generally a nice guy who helped out, had ran a lot of local events and been seen to compete fairly and it was a one off, maybe he'd got divorced or made redundant and his self esteem was low and he wasn't as fast as he used to be, maybe he's drinking too much as well. He maybe thought up this idea when drunk one night and now really regrets it and feels a pillock and that everyone now hates him.
I wouldn't favour banning him from orienteering forever, although maybe banning him from top level or large events where you can get away with this due to the numbers would be an option.

Re: cheating at oringen.....
This reminds me of a theoretical way to cheat that someone described to me in the late 80’s before electronic punching.
You arrive early at the event dressed in your normal O kit. You register for your course but select a late start time. You then sneak away and change into a disguise, over your O Kit, beard, hat, walking cloths, boots and rucksack. You make a second entry under a different name and mumble a bit about how it may take you a while as you are only walking. You get an early start and set off at a brisk walking pace and punch your control card until you get within a couple of controls of the finish. You then find a bush to hide in somewhere away from sight, leave your bag and control card and change out of the disguise. Next you start your official run as normal but make your way back to your den. Here, using a full set of pin punches concealed in your bag you mark your fresh control card with the correct patterns, copied from the card from the first run. Then, having allowed enough time, emerge again punch the last couple of controls and finish in a fast but credible time.
Finally to cover your tracks you sneak back into the forest, re-don your disguise and finish your first course.
I wonder if there could be a modern day variation where you sneak off to a concealed computer with an SI control and master stations which you systematically re-program to simulate your passage around the real controls before emerging to visit the last couple as normal ?

Re: cheating at oringen.....
Apparently the guy has done it at previous o-ringens.
As for using your own SI mater-station; you're gonna have to be VERY good at estimating split times.
