Re: Start process for SIAC cards ?
We are in the middle of a series of bike events, two hour score events around the quieter lanes of West Cumbria. They have been set up with SIAC availability for anyone with the ecard. They work particularly well because the control boxes are often fastened to footpath finger posts, and several feet from the road. Having to unclip, dismount and turn the control box around in order to punch can take quite a few seconds.
The same will be true of urban events where street furniture often doesn't leave the control box in the most convenient positioning. And, sometimes it helps to protect the control box from vandalism if it is put 'out of the way'. It will take a year or so for folk to realise the true advantages of the SIAC system, and then we will wonder why it took so long to adopt it!

Re: Start process for SIAC cards ?
Ahhhh ... I wonder if one or both of the caveats below were the cause of our approx 3% failure-to-activate-at-Check rate on each day of Twin Peak ?
1. SPORTident AIR+ mode can be compromised by disturbances caused by third party equipment. The active antenna of some GPS watches can reduce the SIAC's sensitivity
so as a general rule a GPS watch and SIAC should not be carried on the same arm.
2. If an alternative code is used for the CLEAR station there is the possibility that the
runner will dib in the CHECK station while the SIAC is still beeping/flashing. This will not register and contactless punching will not be activated for the SIAC.
I doubt that anyone would actually Clear if their card was still flashing and beeping - I don't think I would. But GPS watches (not necessarily your own) in the close vicinity could very easily happen in busy Start lanes.
