There's a new augmented reality game Pokemon Go. It's basically orienteering, with the controls replaced by augmented reality pokemon (i.e. they appear on your device/headset when you're in the right place, and the device registers you are there).
It's not available in the UK yet, but a programmable version could be used for coursesetting without the bother of hanging controls.

You can already dispense with control hanging using HippsomApp ... it's worked for me in a couple of very different areas.

Aaah, that explains why I keep seeing photos of Pokemon in streets from younger trendier people on twitter.

Re: No more control hanging?
Lots of Pokemon Go players out in Nottingham today. Think there might have been a Pokestop by the Robin Hood statue where the city race was based. I sat under a tree for quite a while waiting for my lift home and there were droves of young people walking around glued to their phones and some young families too. It must be a good thing that people are out playing computer games rather than sitting at home doing it but there will be a lot of accidents. It will be very interesting to see how this develops.

In Manchester, 3 kids were relieved of their phones at knifepoint.

Couldn't do a classic race with this technology, my phone was at 20% battery after an hour of this at lunchtime

All the pokestops are on monuments and things like that. Not sure where they got their data from but everything of that ilk seems to be in there

The underlying engine and database are the same as in https://www.ingress.com/. Many of the Ingress portals were submitted by local users.

I can see the draw, but for me it will have a limited timespan because it's something that needs time investment to get anywhere, which I don't really have.

Re: No more control hanging?
For my 6 1/2 year old son who is already into Pokémon trading cards this has nearly blown his wee mind. It's all he's talked about for a week, and all he wants to do is take my phone and go and find more.
Geocaching is more fun and less battery intensive.

Also, it's been released in the UK now and is free to play (you can make things easier with small payments but essentially you can play free), so if you are at all interested it's worth a look.

Re: No more control hanging?
I need a better phone, my cheap blackberry doesn't do this stuff, although it's quite an expensive free game in that case, but it does look fun and my son kidnapped my gameboy and pokemon games years ago.
I'm not good at multitasking though so could see me ending up under a bus the first time I play it.
