Travel Insurance
Does anybody have a recommendation for a company/policy that specifically includes running/orienteering trips and competitions?

Re: Travel Insurance
Sportscover direct do top-up insurance if you already have a standard policy - and you only need to cover the days you're actually competing.

Re: Travel Insurance
I have used Sports Cover Direct top up twice for mtbo competitions abroad. Seems to provide very comprehensive cover.

Check with Richard Weston (ex BOF insurer and orienteer). Makes sure insurance covers orienteering RACES, as well as bumbling round a forest.

Snowcard has different levels and includes orienteering in all but the basic one:

Re: Travel Insurance
Snowcard website says it covers recreational amateur activities. I know GG is getting on a bit now but I suspect he's more professional competition activities!!
Many policies state they cover 'orienteering' but their view of orienteering excludes timed or time trial type competitions. Many would also exclude Switzerland etc if the competitions were high.
Jon's advice of going to Richard Weston is sensible as he knows what he is doing.... buy through a random website then double check ALL the small print.

Very true - the free travel policy I got with my bank account was recently extended to cover several activities including orienteering, but not "where such activities are organised before you depart on your trip for competitive or racing purposes". So if you were on holiday, came across an event, and entered on the day, it would presumably be fine, but not if you entered before you left!

Re: Travel Insurance
Thanks to gg for raising this. I have checked with Tesco and Direct Line and neither will cover competitions. I have emailed BOF to see if they can assist with cover for GB selected Orienteers. Many Brits are competing in Europe this summer. Maybe the EHIC will suffice and have mainstream travel insurance to cover the journey/baggage?

Dogtag cover competitive events and extreme sports. We have used them for ages. They are one of the companies that covers extreme sports, Marathon de Sables etc.

Re: Travel Insurance
EHIC won't cover you if you are helicoptered off from anywhere and need to medivaced home
If you are competing make sure you have insurance cover that covers
Also it's debatable if GG was covered for orienteering or any paid staff as Dogtag excludes 'professional' activities. A paid coach on a tour is a professional?
You would need to discuss with the underwriters to be certain.

In days gone by if you were selected and running for GB then you were covered by a BOF policy (via Richard Weston).
If you are going to WMOC or similar you are not representing GB but just a normal amateur punter and the likes of Dogtag as mentioned above would cover you. Ask the underwriters if you are not sure

Re: Travel Insurance
Marks & Spencer look like a good bet. They cover participation in orienteering and only exclude 'participation in or practice of any professional sports'. Orienteering is an amateur sport

Re: Travel Insurance
BMC travel insurance cover orienteering at their "rock" policy level and above, and offer optional extra "professional" cover if you're being paid to do it. They're not the cheapest, but are very helpful if you do happen to break some limbs in a remote spot.
