I have been looking at the London transport website and looked at fares.
As i read it the only way to pay is with an oystercard which i don't have, with a visitor's oystercard, which there is not time to get posted out, or with a contactless card which i do not have.
The only alternative i can see is to buy a day ticket which is some 7 times the cost of the single ticket I need.
Can someone who knows tell me what I can do?

Assuming you're going via Gatwick From http://www.visitlondon.com/traveller-in ... rt/gatwick
If you do not have a Visitor Oyster Card, but still plan to travel around London for more than a day, buy an Oyster card at the Concierge outlets in Gatwick North Terminal or Gatwick South Terminal. You must exit through Customs first. You can also buy an Oyster Card at the Skybreak Service Centre in both terminals and at the Gatwick Airport train station.

If you have a suitable smartphone, apparently both Apple Pay and Android Pay are supported (plus a few provider-specific apps).
See https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/contactless/other-methods-of-contactless-payment
(I have no experience of using these for the Underground; maybe someone else can vouch that they actually work in practice )

You might have a contactless card by default - even if you haven't asked for one. Check if it has this symbol

Re: london transport please help
Thank you for replies, but none of them resolve my issues.
I am not going to Gatwick.
I do not have a contactless card.
My smartphone is dead.
I do have standard debit and credit cards, and cash, but none seem to be acceptable.
The list of places one can buy a visitor's oystercard are all useless for my journey.
Can I buy a one way ticket (DLR, tube and london overground) with cash or standard card? and if so how much is it likely to be?

You can get a standard Oyster card when you get to London. According to TripAdvisor this can be done at any tube station. The difference with a visitor Oyster card is that you pay a £5 deposit rather than a £3 fee. The deposit is refundable, but it probably makes more sense to keep the card active and use it on your next visit.
Alternatively if you know anybody locally with an Oyster card (I know you live in Scotland so maybe not, but we live in Leeds and Mrs Frostbite has two), you can borrow it for the weekend. This is perfectly ok if it is only used for pay as you go.

If you look up a single fare, they give a cash price, so I assume you can still pay cash - but it's not cheap!

Probably get a standard oystercard.
Croydon is not flush with tube stations, but there are other places you can get them

You can get a refund on the card including deposit if you want to

AFAIK there are still plenty of ticket machines that take cards, or cash, or both.
and if so how much is it likely to be?
Bit difficult to tell unless you give us some idea of when and where you are going!
If say Stratford to West Croydon, then National Rail Enquiries indicates an off-peak single fare of £5.90 if you change at Canada Water, compared to Oyster / Contactless of £2.50.

Re: london transport please help
Visitor oyster card is designed for overseas visitors. Just buy a regular one from a big ticket machine at any tube station. Or ideally at Gatwick, as you can now use Oyster from there. Pro tip - don't get the Gatwick Express.
Stop talking, start running.
