OK
Excuse me if I start by rambling....
Up running round Glen Sax on Saturday, Ackers and I intersected the 2 Breweries route, followed some of the course in the period when it round Dun Rig.
Before that, you used to plummmet off into Glen Sax and out again. It is back to this original route again.
So, train of thought goes....
First did the Breweries when ? anyroad I was still at Uni,
There used to be a squad weekend organised by Martin Hyman, plenty of orienteers did the race.
So, I say, get your bums up to Broughton in September (25th) for the 2 breweries, a fabulous 19 miles in the Border Hills. Bring your Jelly Babies.
It satrts at the Traquair brewery and finishes at the Broughton brewery, and once you have finished you get treated to their brew.
Then there is a ceilidh too - ripper
Then on Sunday the Meldons relays, maybe - involving beer
chunter, blah, haver, etc...
Get out there

From distant memory...
Route: (Landranger 73-72)
Traquair House
up to Birkscairn hill (661m)
down to Glensax (320m)
up to Hundleshope Heights (685m)
down to Glenrath Farm (240m)
up Whitelaw Hill (476m)
down to Stobo (180m)
... this is where you might consider starting racing.
up Trahenna (546m)
down to Ratchell Farm, and round the road to Broughton Brewery.
I'll buy beer for any noper who can beat my PB.

I did the Breweries once int he early 90's. I was toddling along quite happy as far as Stobo and thought it was no trouble and then Trahenna hit me - I was just crawling by the top and had to have a sit down before wobbling down into Broughton, having lost about 40 places. Maybe this year I'll give it another go, and save a bit for the end.

A good time depends on the year, but under 3 hrs should be a target for any bloke with aspirations.
Trahenna, the final climb is legendary - you have to experience it to understand. Depending on what happens when you get there it is either hilarious or hellish.
Trahenna is a rite of passage, how will you come out of it ?

Oh no it didn't.
That course avoided the 350m climb up Hundleshope, doing instead 150m up Dun Rig and 75m up Broomy Law. "Officially" it had 400' less climb and was two miles longer. Times are reckoned to be comparable - though it was good conditions when I ran it.
Beer offer valid anyplace for a month after the race for beating my PB (which, as Mr Winkle says, is hardly world beating - there were four orienteers ahead of me).

and another thing
someone out there said to me
'That lot will talk about it but none of 'em will actually turn up and do it, they don't get it'
do you get it ?
If you ever want to do well in a Classic race then you need to be able to do this sort of fell race, and do well
If you ever want to do well in a middle distance race then if you are not fit enough to do this kind of fell race then you'll just be an also ran in the middle distance.
So who's going to prove the mystery detractor wrong ?
I want names in the frame.
