Mixed Relay
I thought the free livestream was very entertaining. It was good to watch elite runners, and it was nice to be able to pick out many GBR jerseys. The town looked good and well decorated. It reminded me of the splendid show put on in Nairn last year.
I do know not everyone is convinced of the format's merits.
The GPS wasn't much help, as seems usually the case in built-up areas. It will probably only help when the runners are in parkland. I think the story may have been more clearly told with cameras showing all runners through particular controls, at least on the early legs, rather than jumping about so much. And particularly if the screen showed the runners as they went through, as with the coverage of some other relays. Fair enough to feature the Polish runners of course.
The results are at http://eventor.orienteering.org/Documents/Event/758/1/Results
I think we should not be disappointed with the GBR teams.
The results suggest to me the leading countries are quite predictable. Of course, part of the spectator appeal is things go wrong, there is pressure and it only needs a little thing to make a significant difference. I guess all countries have found this in only a few years. But in any particular race surely some of the strongest countries will always pull through.
The thing is the men play a supporting role in the format, at the moment. Many countries have quite fast men runners (albeit perhaps not quite as quick as the Swiss and Swedes) but not so many can put a whole team of four really fast runners together. Not many countries have two runners amongst the group of the speediest women. In this race, picking an arbitrary cutoff of "under 16 minutes", Switzerland, Sweden and Russia each have five athletes in that category, Denmark has two, and Hungary has one (Fanni). (Norway have a runner on exactly 16 minutes.) Jess, Charlotte and Hollie were today in the next group, so we can hope to vie with the next group of countries, but it might be a while until we challenge for the (3-team) podium.
Perhaps time for at least one domestic competition in the format?

Re: World Cup 2016 Round 1 Poland
Mixed Sprint Relay is a novelty format for the telly. I doubt it will take on domestically in countries where there isn't the strength and depth across clubs/teams.
GBR's only hope of improving from where we are is to provide more high quality sprint distance events (I believe there's now one available at every Scottish Urban League race) and focus as a national team on MSR practice.
GBR now have a dedicated Sprint/MSR team/group and they are working towards having a lead coach and specific weekends thanks to the drive from a number of folk (incl Chris Smithard).

I think it is a great race but perhaps controversially suggest that MWWM would work better. I also believe that last year our athletes should have given the team event more prominence over and above the potential for winning medals in the individual sprint.

In the Organiser's Inbox. When I work out which of them we'll use, and which we won't (because what we're running is only a trial), I'll post them.
