Help please.
The details say the A171 road is out of bounds. Looking at route gadget, runners at the previous race often used the footpath alongside the A171 road. Is the whole lot - footpath and road - OOB this time? Anyone know?
Or will it be blindingly obvious when I get my map

And also if anyone involved with the organisation happens to be reading this i have another question.
Will the Elite sprint races be crossing roads with traffic? If so i have concerns over safety given that they are all starting at 1 minute intervals. I'm hoping they're all sensible enough not to get carried away in a head-to-head situation but with JWOC places on the line I'm not sure.

Re: Whitby Urban
I hope (and expect) OOB roads (and footpaths) will be clearly marked on the map, otherwise how can I be sure on the run, after I have turned my map round several times, which is the A171 ?

Re: Whitby Urban
It was pretty obvious on todays map where the road, not pavement, was out of bounds - i.e. not to be crossed, and hope nobody did. The viable route was through an underpass marked and overprinted on the map. https://www.facebook.com/groups/urbanracinguk/
An interesting course using a new residential area as well as the town centre, and refreshed by the occasional hail shower!

A good and enjoyable event, weather excepted. My only comment is I thought the usable path alongside the A road, and a narrow gap at the foot of some steps farther east, could have benefitted from a little exaggeration in width.
Sincere thanks particularly to all those helping out in the elements.

Re: Whitby Urban
I was caught out by the A171. I set off towards it before realising it was the A171. I stopped and had a good look at the map and wondered if I was allowed to run along the pavements, which looked as if they might have been OK. Not wanting to break any rules, I turned back and went a longer way round. I had some discussions with others at the finish, and the general consensus was that we weren't sure. Looking at the details it says:
This is quite clear that the road is OOB, but doesn't mention footpaths, which were perhaps not OOB.
I think this explains my confusion and just points out how difficult it is to write things that mean what you want them to mean.
The A171 main road is marked Out of Bounds on all maps that are affected. This road may only be crossed using bridges or underpasses, which are all highlighted with the ‘Crossing Point’ symbol on the map. All other roads can be crossed as you choose; some are still busy with vehicles and care must be taken.

Not sure why the confusion - the note is concerned about CROSSING the A171 not about running alongside it to the appropriate crossing point

Re: Whitby Urban
As it said "The road is marked out of bounds" that rather states that the road is out of bounds. It is open to interpretation whether the road includes the pavements, and I didn't want to go into the out of bounds.
Just because it talks about crossing, doesn't imply that running on the pavements IS allowed.
My point was that it is difficult to write things clearly. A picture showing what is and isn't OOB would help, where things might not be clear. Bearing in mind that not everyone has done lots of Urban events.

.
Look at the map - the purple 'out of bounds' hatching is only on the road - not on the pavements adjacent

Re: Whitby Urban
Pleased to say my course didn't get anywhere near the A171, so I needn't have started this thread....
To me it does look as if running along the pavement alongside the A171 is allowed.
There were controls in the SE corner. Looks like the only reasonable way to get to them would be on the pavement alongside the A171 over the new bridge.

The ones in the small woodland were accessible under the A171 on the old railway then up the steps and across or round the field.

Re: Whitby Urban
You've lost me there KP.
I was looking at legs 11 - 12 and 13 - 14 on course 5. Routes shown on routegadget do use the path alongside the A171 over the bridge.
I'm not trying to be awkward/pedantic about this - I haven't done many urban events, and I was genuinely intrigued.

KP is talking about 9 - 10 0n C5 (10 - 11 on C6) option was to go out of the gate accessing
8,9,10 then down the disused railway line under the A171 and up the steps (see Nigel Bunn's route on C6)
