Many thanks to LOC and friends for a great weekend with two fantastic events on glorious terrain run by volunteers.

Re: Lakes Weekend
I thought Holme Fell was fabulous - a good course on wonderful and varied terrain. Nice use of the "choice of controls" leg as well.
Unfortunately I had huge problems making sense of the map at Tarn Hows. The mapping itself is, as far as I could tell, great, but I really struggled with the 1:7500 enlargement. Apparently my brain isn't very good at interpreting the extra-thick, extra-spaced-out contours - even looking at the map now I have difficulty seeing the overall shape of the land, although it's a bit better when viewed at arms length.
I'm quite prepared to accept that this is a problem with my orienteering technique - and I also made some stupid navigational errors that were unquestionably my own fault - but perhaps it's also an example of why larger map scales are not necessarily helpful for everyone. I'm not convinced that 1:7500 was necessary for younger eyes anyway - certainly I found the more complex terrain on Holme Fell the next day perfectly legible at 1:10000.
That whinge aside, Tarn Hows is still a great area to run on, and I have the utmost respect for any volunteer who was doing an outside job in that miserable rain.
