Having some sort of water splash used to be mandatory in the early days of sprint and urban races (park races) until some jobsworth decided that competitors might slip and get too wet.
There was an April Fool a few years ago that suggested that you could modify a SI SI Card (using part of a biro) so that it would register at a control site without having to visit it. Enter SI Air....

Actually, I think you'll remember there was a serious accident during a PWT.... so the 'jobsworth's' obviously decided it wasn't a good idea for runners to break their backs jumping of walls onto misplaced matteresses.......

It wasn't misplaced mattresses, it was using thin gym mats instead of thick pole-vault type crash mats. Athletes were told thicker type was being used and so one jumped and landed sitting down (as her gymnastics training suggested). She broke her back.
