Save the dates - 30-31st July 2016! The Purple Thistle is shaping up to be pretty special this year.
We're just finalising permissions to get onto a new area and then we'll open entries.
So far, things are looking like:
Sat pm: Middle race, Balmacara
Sat eve: Middley-ish race, The Plock *new area*
Sun am: Long race, Balmacara
Balmacara is proper wilderness terrain, amazing rock and contour detail with views over to the mountains on Skye.
The Plock is the last bit on the mainland before the bridge. It's a sort of parky-heathland but with proper terrain lumps and bumps too. We should have a bit of the town mapped for the full variety.
So come join us for a low-key, sociable weekend of high quality orienteering on the west coast.

Looks good. Can you confirm if the camping fee applies to young children too or if there is an age cut off. Thanks.

No charge for under 8s. Will update the various details with that and a bit more on the (basic) campsite facilities too.
Quite a few B&Bs right next to the camping (Balmacara Square) for those who want a solid roof. Plenty more options in Kyle of Lochalsh too.
Already mutterings of a BBQ social there on the Saturday night from a few people so should be a good fun time.

Excellent. Thanks for confirming. Definitely going on our diary.

I can recommend Balmacara as a fantastic area (having mapped it several years ago!). Lots of runnable moorland with great contour and rock detail.

Just a bump for this thread to remind people that entries close in about 2 weeks time.
Heading up there at the end of the week and can't wait to get back out in the terrain. See if I can spot the otters on The Plock that the mapper was telling me about...

Which nights can the campsite be used? We would be looking to arrive on Friday and leave on Monday, though I am being talked into another night and a day sightseeing.

The Forestry Commission are letting us stay on a field that was an old campsite right on the Balmacara map. We'll have it for Friday and Saturday but we'll have to shut it up after the event on Sunday because it is not normally in use. There is a 'proper' campsite only a few down the road at Reraig though.

Thanks - I was sort of expecting that. Reraig is a bit limited: "we cater mainly for touring Caravans and Motorhomes (7.5m max. length), though we do accommodate some very small, backpacker (2 person max.) tents" - but we'll work something out.

Re: New area for Purple Thistle 2016
There is an excellent campsite at Ardelve just a few miles east http://www.ardelvecaravanandcampingpark.co.uk/ The site overlooks Eilan Donan Castle and the little village of Dornie is close by. After controlling on Saturday I enjoyed a cool pint of Anstel at the local hostelry. I can also recommend the artisan coffee and bakeshop next to the site (atghighland or All the Goodness Highland). The Plock is a great area with some "lost world" sections and the views from Balmacara are outstanding.
