If you didn't get to enjoy Race the Castles in autumn 2014, the 2016 Scottish Orienteering Championships will be back to Balmoral in May. This is a special place, and we are privileged to be allowed use of the estate. You get to see the Royal Castle set in manicured grounds, and then enjoy orienteering across three sizeable forested hills, with contour detail and rocky features which make this a fabulous technical area. The mapping has been updated and extended using LIDAR. The assembly arena on the cricket field gives everyone a downhill run-in and the warm May sunshine will add to your sense of achievement and enjoyment. We look forward to welcoming you to Balmoral.
On Saturday 21st May we have the Scottish Individual Championships (also the 9th UK Orienteering League event of the year), and on Sunday 22nd May we have the Scottish Relay Championships.

For a cheeky preview of (most of) the map see Route Gadget from Race the Castles:

Great to see entries coming in for Balmoral. Could I ask that when entering via OEntries that you do select the correct fee please. A number of folks have left the fee at the default, which is the non BOF adult fee of £18. Those who have selected the incorrect fee will be contacted by email with the arrangements for a refund (£2 back towards increased BOF fees?)

Course planning coming on a treat, first looking as good as ever, roads to the area now open (after the January floods) and even Sheridan's (the best butcher in Deeside) is back up and running (Charlie was apparently seen there this week buying his pound of sausages...)

Weren't you planning on holding the British at Balmoral in 2018?

Given the assembly area is the same for both days, is there any scope for camping overnight? I assume the toilets (and traders) won't be going anywhere between Sat & Sun

I seriously doubt camping will be allowed on the Balmoral estate within 200m of the castle... There are plenty of campsites in Deeside nearby (Braemar, Balloter - re-opening on 1st May, Aboyne).

We are planning the races so that the run-in is shared over the two days, meaning we don't have to relocate marquees and hopefully club tents (weather permitting of course), and only have to re-arrange taping for the relay configuration.
I had considered camping overnight on the estate as I can't get my relay controls out until after the Scottish Champs is done but as Big Jon says I suspect I'll have to camp elsewhere instead.

Re: Balmoral - Scottish Orienteering Championships 2016
I checked out control sites for the Scottish Championships (Individual) yesterday. This was a Long O of 19km and about 500m climb (correct scale). The area is fantastic - one of the best forests I have ever visited. The area will also be used for BOC2018 - an embargo notice has been sent to British Orienteering for publication.

I can vouch for the blue skies in Deeside today - and the same forecast for tomorrow.
We've booked good weather for the Scottish Championships weekend this year and are currently negotiating with the weather gods for the 2018 BOC weekend to be equally fine

Re: Balmoral - Scottish Orienteering Championships 2016
One week left to enter for the Scottish Orienteering Championships 2016 - entries close at midnight next Tuesday, 10th May. Don't miss your chance to enjoy Balmoral in May, enter now if you haven't already done so.
For the Scots south of the border and elsewhere - the SOC Guidelines state:
Trophies shall be available to the first Scot in each age group. For this purpose members of Scottish open Clubs shall be automatically recognised as “Scots”. Other orienteers wishing to be classed as “Scottish”, such as those born in Scotland or long-term Scottish residents currently living outside Scotland or competing for their university, must make their status known to the organiser before the race
“Scots” are any one of the following
a] born in Scotland
b] have at least one Scottish parent
c] be a member of the Scottish Orienteering Association
Shortly after entries close, an email will be sent to all entrants with the above guidance and requesting that any one who seeks to be classed as "Scottish" reply accordingly.
