Just in case somebody doesn't get the joke Andy didn't really squeeze through the fence.

I suspect this was not top of anyone's priorities at the weekend...
If we are not going to value these competitions there is not much point in having them.
I have to declare an interest here (It appears that BASOC won the small club section), but competitions that encourage a club spirit/bonding/belonging are few and far between. We are always going on about clubs being central to the development and promotion of orienteering, but most of the time all the focus is on individuals.
I understand that Moravian had more people there for the relays than the individuals, a sure sign of a club that has a strong team identity/spirit.
It was noticeable on Saturday how much noise/encouragement there was when some clubs members appeared in the run-in, and some other clubs members (sometimes large ones) were met with silence from their club members.
My own arrival at the late stages of the relay (long after prizegiving) was met by a mass charge of my BASOC club members joining me for the final 100 metres, with lots of noise. I really did feel part of a team.

And that is something to look at for next year. The format this year was changed from the Scottish Score to the Individual SOC - did it work? Does it add something that the Compass Sport Cup/Trophy doesn't already deliver? Can we make it more visible during the event rather than an afterthought?
This was my first relay and I really enjoyed the team side of it - and we were better as a team than each of us individually. TAY is not competitive in the SICC and I didn't feel I was part of a club team during the individual run. There was no call from the club for people to please run to make up the numbers, like there is for the Compass Sport heat. Was this more alive in other clubs?

Just stitching a scoring system onto an already established, and more important, event is not the way to go about this.

Perhaps it is exactly the way to go. It doesn't really put any extra burdens on the organisers (apart from running a pre-defined algorithm on a computer), and it could entice more of the less committed club members to enter as they want their club to do well. Why else were there more Moravians at the relay than at the individuals?
The SOC is likely to have the largest contingent of any clubs members than at any other event apart from the Scottish 6 Days. It's a perfect place to create a real club spirit on a large scale. With all respect to the Scottish Score champs it's never had anywhere near the entry numbers to generate the atmosphere of a big event. You need big numbers to make a lot of noise and create excitement.
Why can't the Scottish Championships also be used recognise club performance as well as individuals.

The SICC was at the Scottish Individual Championships, which you just said had less MOR runners than the relays. Doesn't that prove the point that MOR don't care about it?
Having it at SOC is going to get the best attendance, I have no doubt about that at all. It's not going to make anyone care. There were no results, no prizes, and the only news item has been about the rules. The Scottish Champs is way more important, I didn't hear a single mention of SICC all weekend.
What's the difference between the SICC and the CSC exactly?

That's because it seems the organisers didn't care about it judging by the original remark that sparked my response.
It didn't help that the new rules and announcement were only published a week before.

It is, but what's to stop us recognising clubs as well as individuals as Scottish Champions?
Relays don't quite fit that bill as they are still only groups of 3 people, not the whole club.

The CSC is a UK competition that few Scottish clubs are prepared to travel to the finals even if they qualify. It also has more stringent requirements for the courses people must run.
The SICC could become an important part of the Scottish Champs and encourage greater participation from the less experienced. Relays can be a bit daunting for them as well as they don't want to let anyone down.
Perhaps the SICC should be extended to include results from some other events and culminating with the Scottish as a sort of final? That may also encourage a few more club members to travel to some other larger events rather than just sticking to local club events.
I can only see good things from encouraging more of this "belonging to a club" proudness. It could be described as like tribal/gang identity, with us all wearing our "colours" as we go into battle.

Donkey's & windmills.......
I can't think of 1 single email received from my club over the last 'x' number of years promoting the SICC.

I agree wholeheartedly with this! Especially in relays runners should be expected/encouraged to wear club O-tops. It makes spotting who is leading a race much easier and also helps integrate newcomers into any club.

I agree that there has been little interest in the past and that includes me, what I am suggesting is that if marketed better it could be a good way to encourage a more "Club focused" mentality than the current "Individual focused" one.
This may lead to an increase in club membership.
The other upside is that it requires very little extra effort from event organisers, the bigger effort required is in marketing it properly.

Just to put the record straight MOR had 57 entered in the Individual and 16 teams of 3 (48) in the relays. Our club was making plenty of noise for all our own runners on Saturday as well as Sunday, 'caring' equally about both days. With some not running on both days, we probably had around 65 total taking part in the weekend.
Currently the 'North' Scotland clubs all seem to be generating great enthusiasm for the sport for a number of reasons for which the SOA have been pivotal in supporting. North is also getting almost too much of the major events currently, including 3 S6Ds on the trot and Brit Champs in 2018. Lets hope the rest of Scotland can start gaining some of the some resources that North have had for the last few years and therefore generate the same noise and enthusiasm.

SOC is in the South East next year, at Gullane which is easily the best area anywhere in the Lothians or the Borders. Once you get to our second best area, whichever you choose there are over a hundred better ones in North. That's the resource we don't have and are unlikely to gain, unless you want to follow athletics and put Deeside in the East.

Thanks to everyone involved at the weekend. Gutted I was so ill that I couldn't really do much though I did enjoy a good walk on the Saturday in the beautiful forests (even spotting some deer). I was particularly pleased that the planner had kindly arranged that the W21S enabled easy routing for taking in all 8 memorial cairns and statues too!!! Some had very beautiful views and they were certainly impressive structures.
I've also just enjoyed some very nice cheese as part of my dinner...thank you!
