You have to separate the technical side of web management (providing a responsive site, based on a CMS) and the editorial side (providing the actual content).
The former is best left to a professional, while the later needs someone with an actual interest in the subject and can be a volunteer. In print terms: one is a type setter/printer, the other is a journalist/editor.

You mean fail to beat England for 30 years? No, I don't think we could manage that . Then again, I didn't have BigJon marked as a 'kipper...

Re: Membership and levy proposal
With all this talk of volunteers and paid employees, for the life of me I cannot understand how BO has no committee dedicated to developing the sport. It is after all central to BO's constitution, and it cannot be for lack of volunteers, there are hundreds developing the sport every weekend. And added to which, neither the professional development officer or Chief Executive who deals with SE development grants, are orienteers. Just a thought, for those who are in a position to make changes. A committee perhaps at the very least.
A committee to assist the Board in developing the sport, and to direct and assist the professional staff, and for them to report to.

In fact, in an appeal by Mike Hamilton, about a year ago, asking for our ideas for 'improving/developing' the sport..... he remarked.... and not 'increasing membership numbers'. Implying.... 'not that old chestnut'.

On the subject of volunteers vs paid staff:
Most families nowadays are so busy that they struggle to find time to volunteer; some do manage to organise, plan and control, or maybe sit on their club's committee, but not much else.
The rest gets left to us retired folk who (theoretically) have more time. Those who are able to do stuff are generally already involved. I'm chairman of my association and I work my socks off sometimes; so do my officers. My point is that the available volunteers are already busy for orienteering, and we need a viable National Office - with paid staff - to do the stuff that us volunteers do not have time for.
I hesitate these days to ask National Office for anything unless it's absolutely necessary. Our paid staff are working so hard that I do not want to give them any more stuff to do. They keep so many things going; if you have not already read the document on the EGM pages about BOF's core business, then please do so - now! Then quit whinging and vote for the proposal, and get your friends to do so too.

I'm sure you will agree, with your experience of working in a club and the region, that everything that happens in your region, in the club, in the forest, is performed by volunteers. The entire sport is run by volunteers, with a couple of handfuls of 'paid' mappers to prepare new maps for us.
BOF don't have a direct input into the running of a club, or what goes on in the forest. BOF, do, however, give us nothing but a stream of 'box ticking' exercises..... licences to do this, courses to allow us to do that, safety workshops/courses, club mark, risk assessments, child welfare briefs. It has all gone too far..... we are a perfectly capable and responsible group of volunteers, with a great deal of common sense (and of course, a great deal of experience)..... we can look after things just fine.

Some, possibly most, but not all; and that is exactly why we need things like risk assessments, safety courses, child welfare policies, etc, to protect us from the few who are not!

All of those merely lull us into a false sense of security. We have a perfectly good set of 'controllers' who do all of that as part of their remit for an event. A club committee is perfectly capable of ensuring the club 'does the right thing', without having a whole load of irrelevant paperwork, which merely shows that some one ticked the boxes and signed at the bottom. It doesn't mean we are protected. Sloppy thinkers and sloppy workers will always be sloppy.
How do you manage to get out of the house and go anywhere.... think of all the dangers there are, and there aren't a load of 'box tickers' out there keeping an eye on your every move.

We will probably never agree RJ, but I can't really imagine any controller not requiring a risk assessment from an event organiser? As an organiser, I would do one anyway. This is basic 'event' practice (for orienteering or any other formal activity). As a former election co-ordinator for a local authority, I remember colleagues questioning why this was necessary 'what could possibly go wrong with our great organising team they would say'
As to child welfare policies and Clubmark, as a parent, I'd like to be assured that my child is in safe hands (as is possible) when orienteering.

Re: Membership and levy proposal
I do agree child welfare policies and Clubmark etc. - the subject of much moaning do reassure parents, especially the new to orienteering types. Clubmark might be a box ticking fest, but I've seen it do some good by pushing clubs in a direction they might not have gone in (ie providing more support to juniors and parents). I see it as partly a development initiative, partly a marketing initiative (perhaps not intended as such) i, but I'm sure some of it is part time waste......
I doubt if Clubmark would be in place in so many clubs if we had relied on volunteers to organise and market it (to clubs), whether you think that's good or bad......

And your family too, if they are BO members and at least 18 by the end of 2016.ChristineV wrote:I hesitate these days to ask National Office for anything unless it's absolutely necessary. Sadly Eddie we dont. In the absence of any NGB scheme you have to go to your local authority and use theirs. Which is pretty mindboggling when your club covers 6 or 7 local authority areas!
Its just another one of those niggly wee issues where BOF actually means EOF.
