Every few years the British University and College Sports (BUCS) folk make a decision on which sports should keep, and which should lose, their BUCS status.
This provides funding/kit for the British World Universities team, as well as the publicity of being a BUCS sport.
This time is now upon us again, and we need a BIG turn out at this year's BUCS.
so, if you are/know a student, tell them it's on and to contact their Uni sports office about going! If you are registered as a student at the start of the academic year you can run (I think)!
This year's event is the 21/22nd Feb in Bristol and should be great fun. Details are steadily coming out and can be found here: http://www.uboc.org.uk/bucs-2016
I believe that course C (Men's C/Women's B) will now be an open TD3 long orange course, in a bid to improve attendance by making the event more accessible to beginners. The event also doesn't clash with the National XCs this year so those brought in to the sport from a running background don't have to chose!

If anyone's worried about transport, you may be able to sort something out with ShUOC/Hallam who will be organising a coach down - if that helps at all. shook [at] sheffield [dot] ac [dot] uk, or Matt Elkington on Facebook, would be the place to contact.
Not promising anything but we may have a few space left after filling it with Uni and Hallam folk

Just talking to folks who are likely to be sole representatives from their universities.
Do you happen to know what matters more to BUCS in judging which sports should maintain status, number of universities competing or number of competitors overall, .....or anything else?

Re: BUCS O NEEDS YOU
I think it's a bit of both.
We want plenty of universities there to show it is a competition representative of British universities.
Those that are able (mainly Sheffield, Edinburgh, and to lesser extents Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Leeds, Bristol) we want as many people - experienced or non-experienced - as they can get!
I've nothing official to do with university Orienteering so this is just what I think - Eddie would know more!

Re: BUCS O NEEDS YOU
Thanks Nic.
Yes basically BUCS are reviewing their sports offer. For a long time they've not brought on board any new sports and so in short to add new they need to look at the current.
- number of universities
- number of participants
- cost to BUCS
- type of delivery (event, league etc)
Unfortunately we are close to the edge here so get galvanising people! I'd suggest that anyone who wants to go but can't (logistics, travel etc) to drop me an email ednicholas@gmail.com

Needless to say, if we do get the elbow I anticipate a uni champs will still go ahead each year, just outside of the BUCS umbrella - which would be a great shame.

I'm sure we had this discussion last time the threat of losing BUCS sanction was hanging over us, but roughly how much do BUCS subsidise the championships by now, and would it help if orienteering offered to take that cost off their hands? Given the current general enthusiasm for crowdfunding anything and everything, I reckon a "save BUCS orienteering" campaign would attract a fair bit of cash from old codgers like me.
I imagine there would continue to be some administrative cost to BUCS, particularly if they are still forcing orienteering to use that horrible entries system, but we could at least try to minimize the financial consideration if doing so might help them to make a decision in our favour.
(And if the unthinkable happens and we do lost BUCS recognition, some crowdfunding to replace the subsidy might be helpful anyway.)

Re: BUCS O NEEDS YOU
I've attempted to make the few orienteers at Warwick aware of this. Hopefully they'll go. Loss of BUCS status could increase cost of attending for the students. Warwick union paid entry, travel and contributed to accommodation for all BUCS events which was very helpful for getting a large team there.

Re: BUCS O NEEDS YOU
Website suggests EWT of 90mins for Men's A - pretty sure this is meant to be ~70mins for a M20, so an expected ~60min for a top M21.

Re: BUCS O NEEDS YOU
Hello everyone
With a week left till BUCS entry deadline current universities entered are
Brunel University
Reading University
Durham University
Leeds Beckett University (Carnegie)
Bangor University
University of Ulster
Lancaster University
University of York
Thanks very much to those who have. I appreciate a number of Universities are finalising numbers so aren't on the list. There may also be some waverers out there so any pressure/gentle persuasion will be massively appreciated.

Oxford, Cambridge?
Sheffield? Or have they all given into the delights of climbing and sliding down Ben Nevis??
Good luck Lancaster, we hope to get the O kit to the cyclist on the team soon.
