How many more night events, including non-O ones, must I go to, where Organisers seem to think that using conventional O signs will successfully direct competitors to the event, off the main road, to the car park, the registration, the toilets, the start ??
Conventional signs are useless !.
All signage should be REFLECTIVE (not 'Hi-Viz) That means spending time to make them up.
They should be attached firmly with cable ties, high up. Not tied on. Wind or joe public can play havoc with those using string. Signs should not be placed where they will be hidden by parked cars, traders, tents etc. They need to be aggressive, 'in yer face' and effective.
The route to all destinations, especially remote parking, should be signed BOTH ways. And left there until every competitor, and most officials, have left/returned.
I have often had to wander around at a Harvesters for ages, trying to find various locations.
I believe NGOC are organising the event this year. I'll put myself forward for 'signage commandant' - so no excuses.
In the meantime, all you organisers of those wonderful, little fetish winter night events . . . .get on Ebay and get some 3M Reflective tape. No more amateurish rubbish hanging at a jaunty angle from a half-hidden gate post, set back from the road !

We use 'flashing' red lights (bike rear lighting) for the start, finish and registration. Often if the walk to the start involves a complex route it will have a few red flashers on it too. Works!

Re: Signage at Night events
Signs for the Soutern Night Champs seemed to be some very old style ones in red and blue. They were small and not at all noticeable. Having a kite at the major turn off point on the A25 would have helped or at least the up-to-date signs that people recognise. Perhaps they were old Army ones as it was a major Army event. Very difficult to spot, too small and not at every junction on very small winding country lanes.

Yes, the signage at the SNC was a bit of a car-crash throughout... From the far car park, there were several individuals missing the turn to the start/registration, as the red/white tape and glow sticks used were a good 20m down the left turn off the main junction not on the junction itself, meaning that they often ended up just carrying straight on and into the competition area.

Would you also like your course signed with easily visible, reflective, flashing signs?

Re: Signage at Night events
It was always going to be tricky to manage four separate car parks and we know that when the Near car park filled up, some cars were then misdirected and took some time to find a parking spot. Also we realise a few more tapes and glow sticks on the route from the Far car parks would have been helpful. Apologies for those problems.
We should have thought of enhancing the signs with reflective tape - we will do so next time.

That would be nice, yes please - might prevent some of the horrendous errors made last Saturday

Thanks for your thoughtful response, David. Also, on a positive note, I think we should not overlook the efforts of all your team, who braved the freezing conditions to put on the event. Good work!

Must have been the night event with the largest participation in Britain for some time. Almost 400 punters is more than a normal British Nights or Harvester I think

I mean no criticism of any one event. It is a generic assumption that day signage will do, that is the problem across the board.
I had a flying run at the SE Night champs and was well clear on my course. However, after my appalling run this weekend I'd very much like to have the whole of my course illuminated in future, and an Elastoplast for my ego.

I thought the map in the final details showing the car park locations was excellent, and I had no trouble finding the cricket pitch car park using it. All highly reminiscent, since it was the site of the JK Relays assembly field in 1971
