Good to see such extensive coverage even if only aired on BBC Scotland and concentration on the British runners. Would have been even better with some more explanation to put the sport in context. Some of it is just repetitive views of successive runners starting and finishing. What about interviews with the planners, controllers, organisers?

I was pleased that they mentioned the the running credentials of the top athletes as well.
It isn't always easy to appreciate how hard people are running. Good to hear that top orienteers are also in the elite for 10000m or fell running.

While I think your suggestions have some validity MJG you need to put them against the context of the average amount of tv coverage that orienteering gets in the UK. Its unrealistic to expect a full on orienteering focussed show when the total amount of BOF members UK wide is what...10k or so?
Since Cameron McNeish was approached to become Patron of the SOA 3 or 4 years ago he has reglarly plugged the sport on TV, in magazine articles and online and I know he was keen to get the adventure show to bid for WOC coverage.
I also thought the WOC coverage was much more compelling to the general public than previous coverage which has tended to focus on technique or 1:1 rather than shown active competition which I think has wider appeal.

I wonder if you can link this greater profile of orienteering in Scotland with the recent run of JIRCS success. certainly can't hurt to have your sport mentioned on TV. ( as a sport that is not a pastime )

I don't think any viewers observing the state of Olav Lundanes at the Glen Affric finish could have been left in much doubt.

Best tv show about our sport I've ever seen in the UK. It clearly portayed it as an elite sport and people really did look like they were trying. And James Tullie's commentating was very classy. Good work all-round folks!

Agree - just seen the first bit (Women's long) so far, but it really comes across excellently - nice mix of info on the athletes, shots from terrain, good background commentary, and use of expert views as well.
Really impressed, and shows what can be done.

I always thought that orienteering could make great TV if repackaged into a one-hour highlights show.
It's a bit dull to watch hours of it live, but a really well-done highlights show with maps, replayed routes, commentary, video and interviews could actually be quite compelling (in a geeky sort of way..)
BBC1 next?

Re: Adventure Show WOC Feature - iplayer Link
It certainly looked good for the Adventure Show remit of showcasing activity in the countryside, Affric and Forres looked superb.
Editing highlights meant they could present the race by following each runner from start to finish before going on to the next. That worked well for highlighting the GB runners, but it lost the sense of an exciting, sporting competition. We just had "Here's Ida/Thierry coming in to win". I didn't see any maps or discussion of routechoice, it could have been an interval start fell race.
Of course, the adventure show is not really a sports programme. They like to show athletic pursuits in the countryside, with a bit of human interest in the participants. They know what they're doing, and that's what they did.
It was good to see, but from an orienteering point of view I though Karel Jonak's (& bbc Alba) WOC-live coverage was better.

I really enjoyed it but agree with Graeme, it was strong on personalities and scenery but didn't really attempt to show the races themselves. Top job from James, and the team all interviewed well.

You clearly didn't see the coverage of the 1985 British Relays....

If you look beyond the poor quality production you'll see a programme that introduced personalities, explained the mechanics and the nature of the sport, and with just a handful of cameras captured the story and the excitement of the race.
Apparently Chris Brasher dispensed with the script, watched the program through once and then did the narration in one take - genius!
And no prizes for guessing who wins!

Brasher does set a very high standard, in a 1980s BBC sort of way.
