I was wondering what clubs' policies were on entry discounts for helpers or for organising club members not helping.
My own club's policy is no discount for helpers (with occasional exceptions) although club members (helping or not) get a discount at EOD events like street-o.
I would have expected helpers to always get free runs - even club members not helping should get at least a discount in my view.
What do other clubs do?

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
Our usual rate at HOC is that helpers pay half the entry fee.
In recent times, members pay half the entry fee for CSC and for relays. This year when we organised the CSC heat, helping members paid nothing (half off anyway + half off for helping).

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
In our club, helpers pay the same as everyone else but enjoy themselves more because they get the social interaction with other club members and make new friends. I really liked what I saw last Sat when loads of members turned up early because we knew there was going to be a bigger-than-normal turnout. People just mucked in and did what needed doing without having appeared on any helper's roster. The most chilled out and friendly event I've been to in a long time.
One thing we always do is give discount to club members (both junior and senior) and £1 off for having your own SI Card (or EMIT brikke in our case).

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
I think it varies locally, with half price runs on the bigger events, but for our KNC's people just volunteer at the start or finish to collect in controls after they've paid. I can't remember anyone saying "oy, I want my £4 back now"
I wonder if reduced or free entry for helpers make it significantly more likely for people to volunteer?
I guess it's one way of saying thank you, but personally I'm quite happy with a thank you
If people expect a discount or free run because that's how it was done in the past then I can see that it might annoy some if this is withdrawn.
If discounts don't make much difference, then it makes sense to charge volunteers the normal rate, then use that money in more effective ways.

We get half priced runs in return for helping.

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
As an impecunious student I used to join clubs specifically in order to be able to help, as helping meant I both got a discount on the entry fee and felt more legitimately entitled to cadge a lift to the race.
My home club doesn't offer discounted entry fees for everyone who helps on the day, but does give a voucher for a free run at a future race to anyone who is unable to run because they are helping - normally the planner, organiser and controller as a minimum.
(Off topic, but as someone mentioned it above, we also get all our entry fees paid if we are "representing" the club at relays or the CSC. I was quite surprised when I first discovered that some clubs don't do this, given how little it costs vs. how much cash most clubs seem to have in the bank.)

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
Half price for helpers at level C & D events. Vouchers at level A & B events at roughly half the entry fee which can be exchanged with traders at the event, for future runs or against club kit. That way planner, organisers and others who can't run get the same benefit as other helpers. Also a promise that pre-entry fees will be refunded if the person is unable to run because of helping.

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
The most important thing IMO is that it is fair for all.
Offering a free/discounted run on the day isn't fair on those whose role on the day means they can't also run OR they feel incapable of competing after several hours of helping - so a voucher system works best.
One of my nearby clubs has also offered a couple of vouchers to the principal officials (including Controllers from other clubs). I think this is a nice touch.

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
Forgot to say that for our Saturday series, anyone who takes on an organiser/planner role that means they can't run gets awarded league points equivalent to 4th place in their category (or an equal points value to their highest score over the whole season if this is greater).

Re: Entry fee discounts for helpers
Normally half price entry for helpers here, plus free parking (of course some will have arrived before the parking crew even start manning the gate!), which helps a bit with the "can't run" problem, though admittedly a voucher system would be good too.
