Forgive a very much ex-orienteer butting in, but some observations from a member of the "public", albeit one who has had experience of flag worrying since the 1970s.
I am fed up with the lack of respect, coverage or recognition of orienteering as a sport. There is nothing obvious on the BBC sport site, even after competition has begun. It as if the sport does not exist and in an era of increased recognition for "minority" sports, singled out for some kind of special ignominy. Is any pressure being brought to bear on the media, are you (cannot say we anymore, with heavy heart) selling the sport sufficiently? I think you are, but for some reason "they" don't want to know. Not asking for the "red button" but some recognition would help.
With respect and gratitude to BBC Alba, the attitude of the host country's broadcaster is extremely disrespectful to the athletes and all you working hard putting on the event. Please let the BBC know. Do they actually recognise orienteering as a sport? I really do not think so.

They're doing a hell of a lot more than they have ever done before. We ain't likely to see anything on BBC sport website anywhere near the top if at all. They are catering to the football loving masses, even in the summer break..
Will be interesting to see if they do when/if team gb start winning medals though.

Of course parity with industrial sport is not going to happen and would be disproportionate.
Look under "O" on all sports down the menu on the BBC sports page and what do you not see? Simple recognition would be a courtesy.
In 1976 Orienteering got on Grandstand. The status of the sport and its World Championship was well understood then. Here's to a medal or few, but I fear that our national broadcaster would still snub our athletes.

In 1976 we had Chris Brasher (forest coordinator at WOC 1976), who had regular articles in broadsheet sports columns and the occasional TV commentating role and Norman Harris a sports photographer and that was from just one club. Maybe we need a Simon Cowell figure to catch the bug!

Re: BBC sport and WOC15
It's not even covered in the local paper The Press and Journal. I have looked on its website for pictures from last night.
Also wanted to see the opening ceremony but that does not look like it will be screened. If anyone knows anything different as to how I can watch it down here in England please let me know.
I have bought the 18euro ticket to watch the competitions by streaming but as my lap top ceased working this week may have to be on the tablet.
I know about ALBA but I will need to stream that as well.
Looks like the sun may be shining over Nairn though

Re: BBC sport and WOC15
I enjoyed the BBC Alba coverage, a shame so much was in Gaelic when so few orienteers (especially at an international event) speak it but there were some bits in English and as an orienteer it was easy to follow what was going on and the overall programme of mix of video footage, GPS map stuff and interviews was very good. It was even sunny, and there were people watching!
Shame it finished before the GB team did. Good luck for tomorrow guys, well done for today.
Made me feel I'm right for hating relays!

Ehhhhh..... it's a Gaelic Channel.... if it was to be transmitted in English it would have been on mainstream TV.
Actually I thought the Gaelic enhanced the coverage & the orienteering expert kept us fully up to date with the progress of Emmahhh
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Re: BBC sport and WOC15
I know it's a Gaelic channel but it's also a Scottish channel and many folk living in Scotland don't speak Gaelic and it would have been nice if with an international event where fewer viewers than normal speak Gaelic that had been acknowledged with subtitiles in English or something. It's still the BBC paid for by licence payers few of whom speak Gaelic even up here.

My 18 euro investment paid off. The coverage was very good with knowledgeable commentary and interplay between GPS routes and seeing the runners. Looking forward to tomorrow's sprint final,

I thought the 18 euros just gave you the GPS tracking. I wasn't that impressed with it yesterday (it was laggy and not all runners were showing) did they do something different today?

Re: BBC sport and WOC15
I've filled in one of the online BBC "send us an appreciation" forms saying how great it was to see WOC covered. If a few of us do that they may be more likely to film more events. (And I was nice and didn't moan and say next time can they do English subtitles like their "From Harris with Love" programme which I also like)

Re: BBC sport and WOC15
I thought the planners succeeded in making IOF's new media friendly flagship work well for a TV audience. Alba had a good variety of TV shots from the rolling sand dunes, to the labyrinth streets of Nairn and the dramatic Vinogradova/Wyder sprint out for bronze. Far better than last year's, for me, more confusing race in Venice.
There must have been some short finger nails near the end though, with the planned 14m 30s winning time per leg, turning out to be closer to 15 mins and Alba TV switching to Gaelic Football as the 11th team finished, just 4 mins after the winning team. Phew!
