Very disappointed that the NT forced the last minute cancellation of the first East Mids Score Champs at Clumber Park today (not the least because we had a 2 and a half hour drive to get there). It was in truth very windy and I witnessed a proper desert style dust storm as the wind picked up the dry layer of a newly ploughed field.
As the elder Miss H was responsible for wielding the anemometer at another NT property I know how seriously the NT take it following an incident a few years ago when a child suffered disabling injuries due to a falling branch even though they were not found to be negligent.
Ironically, we were able to reschedule our liaison with the younger Miss H at the Visitors' Centre at nearby Sherwood Forest - which is famously full of dead and dying old trees - where they were doing a roaring trade and no one seemed remotely concerned by the wind danger. It's run by the council.

Fortunately the NT hadn't thought of that on Kinver Edge. We also had desert style dust storms. There are plans to hoover the computers to remove the dust.

Well, it is to be hoped that weather conditions are a bit better for the first use of NT's Scotney Castle estate near Lamberhurst in Kent (off the A21), on Sunday 26th April! The 'castle' is well worth a visit too.(A little plug to be honest - http://www.saxons-oc.org )

Sorry. National Trust. I wonder what the policy difference is between Clumber and Kinver let alone between the NT and other land owners/managers.

It was -2 as we approached the event. The snow was "falling" sideways at great speed. Enthusiasm in the car was low.
Many thanks to SOLWAY for going ahead with SOL3 at an astonishingly good new area at Mark Hill today.
The sun came out later, and its still shining in the 'burgh

Very disappointing for everyone who travelled, but especially for the organiser and the planner - who must have hung most of the controls by that time.
I note the cancellation was made on the basis of the weather forecast not prevailing conditions (which were still very good at 10am). You wonder if the forecast had changed over night. If it hadn't, they (the National Trust) might have advised the organisers of the possibility of cancellation earlier. It certainly took us by surprise.

Glorious sunshine for most of the day in Deeside (then a wee shower of maybe 10 mins late afternoon).
Come to the Gobi desert of Deeside

Enough wind at Calverley (between Leeds & Bradford) to whip the sail banner off its pole and over the adjoining pavilion, but really rather pleasant in the woods - until the very tail end of the event when cold lashing rain appeared.

That will be "new" as in (checks records...) JK Training, 4th April 1980.

Re: Wind stops play
I should have said new forest, not new area (or New Forest).
New as in all the trees blew down in the early 80's, got replanted and grew up again since it was last used for orienteering. It's like a tough Lakes area, reached by walking along the beach. Since its unlikely the six-day will be there again in the near future, it had me wondering whether the Lakes 5 should annexe it for a holiday event.

Its got enough bracken in some parts to qualify for Lakes-5 terrain
